What Makes a High School Great?

Posted on Wednesday 2 August 2006 at 11:42 AM in Homeschooling - Post Comment

Newsweek has made a list of the top 1,200 high schools across the country (click here to read the article and see the list).  Since I'm originally from Michigan, and now living in Indiana, I thought I would go through the list and see what schools were on the list from Michigan and Indiana.  I liked seeing lots of schools from Michigan making the list, but being from Michigan I also know that most of these schools are located in affluent areas.  $$$ does make a difference...at least in Michigan.  Detroit school officials have been saying this for years.  I'm not familliar enough with Indiana.  Here are the Michigan and Indiana high schools and their rank in the list:

just FYI: the top Utah school is in the worst part of downtown SLC. these are the kids living in, well, 25 years ago, my parents moved from there cuz they didn\'t want to raise us there. I have friends living there now, and I wouldn\'t wanna visit those streets in daylight.

now the 2nd Utah school (about 20 down from West High) is in probably the richest part of the state: Park City. and the rest of the Utah schools are in more affluant areas, but the top one was very surprising.

Great to hear...

...that there are schools in the list that aren't in affluent areas. There really should be a good mix. It was just interesting to me that the ones in Michigan were mostly in the affluent areas.

What a joke!!

N. Central and Lawerance are both in a very diverse area. You have every flavor of child in the building!!
However these two schools are H U G E. I mean HUGE. N. Central has a police post in it. Lots of drugs and crime. Lawerence has the same drug and violence problems.
Then there's Carmel. SUPER rich kids and lots of Latinos. LOTS of drugs (herion, cocaine, x-tacy) All the kids drive BMW's and SUV's ((new ones off the showroom floor)) 5% of them have a job after they turn 16. This is the town I work in!!!

I LOVE our highschool. It has 3 students!! No violence, no crime, no drugs, no bullying, no intimidation, no 'liberal wacko teachers" opinion being smashed into my kids heads!! Yes our home school high school is the best!!
