Front porch herb garden, root maggots in the veggie garden

Attached some shelf brackets to front step railing and put up the two small planters I bought Saturday.  Filled with dirt and planted herbs:  parsley, oregano, salad burnet and golden feverfew.  Now it is just a couple steps to gather fresh herbs!  Tried a few experimental root maggot controls:  vegetable oil and cayenne pepper water.  Poured the vegetable oil around some of the onions and poured the pepper water around the broccoli.  The pests have pretty much destroyed all but a few onions, radishes (we pulled them up), the broccoli have a bunch of orange leaves.  The turnips and rutabagas haven’t developed their roots yet, so not sure how they will fare.  I bought some diatomaceous earth to try also, but it’s supposed to rain tomorrow, so I’ll wait a few days.
