Play dough
Today, I read in the "Making a Home in Town" blog a Play Dough Recipe that brought back memories. Years ago, I made this for little ones. The recipe makes about 8 cups and was perfect for taking to the local Head-Start preschool or to a children's hospital ward as a donation to brighten the kids day. This is one of the very few recipes that actually has the same texture and consistancy of the store bought play dough. It also has a long shelf life, unlike many recipes that go bad within a couple of months.
For Abbie, I cut the proportions of the ingredients down to 1/4th of the amount given in the recipe. It still made enough to fill a plastic marshmallow fluff container. I use the paste type of food coloring as I find it is the most vibrant. The results were great! At 2 yrs. old, Abbie has never played with Play Dough before. She was uncertain of what to do with it at first and barely poked at it. We will be getting it out each morning though and I am certain she will figure it out in no time!
I am already planning ahead to helping Abbie make ornaments for Christmas with the dough. I am going to test it out as I cannot remember if it shrinks or cracks during the drying process. If it works out, it will be great to use in making the Jesse Tree ornaments.
Vacation 2008 Summary
Saturday evening we got home after 15 days of traveling. The first few days were spent with my sister, Linda, and her family. She has a four year old miracle son and now a two month old miracle daughter, who was born on Mother’s day. Linda can’t have babies of her own, but through the miracle of God and the medical world she did conceive these two. God is good. Here is a picture of my new niece, Gillian (pronounced Jillian) Claire.

Sunday evening my brother and most of his family came to see us at my sister’s house. It was great to see them all – boy are the kids growing!

While in Omaha visiting this family, we also visited the zoo and went swimming.

Tuesday morning, June 24, we headed off to visit our friends near Platteville, Wisconsin. We arrived at suppertime and left the next evening after supper. While there we enjoyed discussing the latest things we have been learning about natural living with our good friends Leonard and Valerie. They also have a young son, Shannon. They’ve had more than their fair share of health problems, but a natural diet has helped Valerie a lot. She was near death a few years ago with multiple allergies, and is doing much better now – that is another story for another post!

Wednesday evening we drove on to Tiskilwa, Illinois to stay with my husband’s parents. We lived there before coming here, and have many friends we wanted to catch up with. We didn’t get to meet with all of the ones we had planned, but did have several important meetings with some of them and that was good to do. Tim’s mother’s family had a family reunion at the camp where we used to work that we were a part of from Friday night, June 26 to June 28. All of Tim’s immediate family, as well as many others we hadn’t seen for ages got together there. We continued to share time with some of Tim’s brothers and sisters and their families while we continued in Tiskilwa until July 3.

Last Wednesday we drove on to Wichita, Kansas to stay with my sister Becky and her family through the Fourth of July. We went swimming at a very nice YMCA on Thursday morning and that evening I saw my aunt Barbara and uncle Ray at my sister’s house for a nice brisket dinner. We went to a Christian concert in the evening and happened to meet with an old friend of ours there. It was great to catch up with her. We were sorry that her husband wasn’t with her, as we haven’t been privileged to meet him or his daughter yet. I took our youngest three children home before the fireworks as they were super exhausted and the loud music was a bit too much for them. We saw the fireworks at a distance on our way home, and they were satisfied with that. I took some cute pics of my Josiah while there:

While we were there on Wednesday night my 9 yo dd kind of sleep-walked out to the living room after she had been asleep for an hour or two. Her right side of her face was all squinched into a grimace, and her arm twisted strangely. Her right leg was shaking and could barely hold her. She responded to my talking to her, but didn’t quite connect with what I was saying to her. I sat her on my lap until she woke up, and then sent her back to bed. She didn’t remember any of it in the morning. I am thinking it might have been a seizure, but I’m not sure. I wouldn’t be surprised since she just had another vaccine about 6 weeks ago, and she was really tired from getting very little sleep the night before.
On Friday morning we left early and arrived home about 13 hours later – yea! The kids all traveled really well – including the baby. We listened to several books on tape, which helped the long hours on the road to go much quicker. We only ate out twice over the entire 15 days, except one meal I had with Tim’s mom, sister, and sister’s-in-law. That is really good for us! The second time was our last meal on the road! I think most of us were sorry due to how we felt afterward, but we were so sick of sandwiches and snack foods!

Carol
Feelin' Feminine Challenge -My Story
Hello everyone. This entry is for the girls on here. Moms, you can check it out too!
Jocelyn is doing another Feelin’ Feminine Challenge - What’s Your Story? This Challenge is to tell your story about how you came to believe in femininity. Well, I am doing this Challenge. :) Hope you are too.
I have always liked the old-fashioned looks of the dresses the women of the 1800 and the early 1900’s wore. They were so elegant and beautifully made. Somewhere in the years that have gone passed, we have lost that sense of fashion, and now we see girls and women alike dressed immodestly.
I have always wanted to wear dresses like the prairie girls did when they did their chores, or made dinner with their white aprons tied around their waists. I have always thought of women who wore long skirts and wore blouses with long-sleeves and turtlenecks. That is the way I wanted to dress.
When I was little, like 2-7, Momma let us wear shorts and tanktops. But as she read further into what the Bible had to say about how women should dress, the girls in our family could not wear shorts and could not wear tight jeans. We were allowed to wear skirts that came below the knees and sweat pants for chores, and pajama pants for bed. (To tell you the truth, I mostly wear my skirts to do barn chores in, except when one is not clean.) I am so glad I was made to wear skirts!
I have the ideas about the way a women should look because of what my Momma made me do. Of course, being the person I am, who could walk into Wal-Mart with her hair back in a ponytail, and a t-shirts with a skirt, I was all into trying on the pretty skirts made got for me.
As I grew, I started noticing that a lot of the women I saw were in spaghetti strapped shirts that were tight, and very short shorts, or mini-skirts, or tight jeans. I saw how immodestly dressed they were. You can’t even look at the front page of a magazine anymore, without seeing some half-naked person on the front. It doesn’t make me angry that they are dressed that way. I feel sorry for them that they are selling themselves short, as the saying would go. I hate going to the store in the summer because most of the girls are immodestly dressed. We have to guard our little siblings’ eyes because of it.
It is heartbreaking that no one has told these girls the way they are dressing is wrong. But in today’s world, it’s accepted. What has our society come to?
I am not trying to go on about how people should dress, and I am not trying to condemn anyone. I am simply stating my opinions on my view of femininity. So, will you take the challenge on of being a modest girl in an immodest world? A world that would tell you ‘just be yourself, no one else cares.” Actually, a lot of men notice girls and women who dress immodestly. I try to have a loose shirt, and a flowing skirt, with flipflops or tennis shoes.
How will you be judged by people?
Taking on the challenge,
Rachel
I hope you have enjoyed reading the thoughts of a fourteen-year-old girl from the country."You can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens you!" Philippians 4:13
Tea and Honeycakes ~ Monday
Tea and Honeycakes
Every Monday, Wednesday, Friday
"
"Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me [ceased from fretting].
Psalm 131:2 amplified version
"I've kept my feet on the ground,
I've cultivated a quiet heart.
Like a baby content in its mother's arms,
my soul is a baby content."
The Message version
Have you ever watched your children? I have 7 and one on the way, so I have many to watch and at different stages in life. But what I have noticed in my baby who is 10 months old and in my 5 year old, they have the ability to go with the moment. They just enjoy life. Even in my 7 and 9 year old, their imaginations just seize every opportunity to enjoy whatever little joys they have come upon.
In their eyes nothing is too small or unworthy, or even insignificant for their little wondering minds. They enjoy nature with such suprise.
With my children, they are easily entertained by the smallest wonders. A beautiful "weed" in the yard, a small ground worm digging in the dirt, a pile of fresh, crispy fall leaves (I enjoy these too), or seeing our mourning dove preparing for life in my flower basket.
Watching my children, I am reminded that they are fully dependant on me. They have no worries over bills, food, or even clothing. They know that when they get done they will still have a roof over their head to sleep under.
The heart of children seem to also show forth all that God finds best about humankind. What greater image of contentment than that of a young child resting with complete trust on the shoulder of the one who loves him best. His parents, and for us, our Father in heaven.
"Yet You are He Who took me out of the womb; You made me hope and trust when I was on my mother's breasts.
I was cast upon You from my very birth; from my mother's womb You have been my God."
Psalm 22:9-10 amplified version
"Dear Abba Father, I am in complete awe and wonder of your presence everywhere I go. I like my children, will dance in your goodness and sing a new song every morning. I am thankful for the grace you supply me new everyday. Thank you for Your creation and thank you for my children who continue to teach me how to rely and trust in you.
Your Daughter,
Dinner in a Pie
This is a very hearty meal that is great for using up leftovers. I had some ground venison on hand, so I browned it along with some onions, garlic, and bell peppers. Next, you add assorted vegetables and just enough seasoned tomato sauce or a gravy to moisten the meat & vegetables. You don't want too much liquid as it will cause the bottom crust to become soggy.
Make enough pie crust for a 2-crust pie. I rolled it out abit thicker than I would for a fruit pie so that the bottom crust would hold together better when I served up the meal. Line a deep dish pie pan with pie crust. Fill with the meat & vegetable filling. Top with the second crust and seal the edges. Poke holes into the crust to allow steam to vent.
Bake in a preheated 350*F oven for about 1 hour or until pie is bubbly and crust is a golden color.
There are many variations to this pie. Any combination of meat and vegetables that sounds good to you will work. These pies can be made vegetarian style or with meat. Try making the pie with a tamale pie filling and serve with cornbread. Other simple variations could be: fajita mix, chili with cheese, loaded up with your favorite pizza toppings, chicken/broccoli/cheese mixture, beef stew leftovers, or philly steak/bell peppers/onions/cheese mixture.
For vegetarians, you can make any vegetable and grain combination that you love and bake it in the pies. The options are only limited by your imagination. You can use any vegetarian stew recipes and the pie would be great.
For those who do the once a month cooking, this is a great meal that can be frozen for later. You can also scale down the size to use the small single serving sized pie pans to make your own homemade pot pies. Prebaked, these would make a great meal to take to work and heat up in the microwave for your lunch.
Enjoy!
Tuesday's Thoughts
Well hospice is officially coming. The little aide came yesterday morning just as Kristy and I were about to bathe mom and quickly took over the process. I have to say, Kristy and I do a much better job. Mom's hair was not washed, she didn't offer any oral hygiene, didn't clean her nails, or even turn her over and wash her back. And yes, I stood there and watched this go on, cuz thats the type of person I am, never opening my mouth when I should. My dd and I kinda just stood there and took it all in. I waited to see what she (the aide) was going to do next. Well what she did next was, left. LOL She also promised to bring back several supplies for us diapers, wipes, antibiotic cream and tecaderm bandages, none of which I have seen yet. I believe her words were, "I'll drop these things off to you before lunch". I should have asked her what day's lunch was she talking about, lol. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The fig trees are producing a great deal of figs right now. We are picking them by the gallon buckets full each day. My tree is doing so-so because it was damaged last year by some heavy equipment digging out the ditches, but my sil's tree is full to the brim. I have never seen so many figs. I made preserves over the weekend. The only thing wrong with that, is that I'm the only one who eats it, and that is not a good thing, cuz I EAT it! Ummmm so good, on toast! Now I'm hungry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I'm still working in the yard getting it together. I did something that I never thought I would ever do yesterday. I will take a picture of it later today and show you all. My daughter says it's so 1960's. How would she know, she is only 25? LOL Speaking of Kristy, she is on a job interview as I type. Last week when my dh and I went to the doctors, I ask the little nurse if they were hiring. As luck would have it, they were in need of two people. So I picked up an application for my daughter and she was called in for an interview. I pray she gets it, she is wanting a job so bad. I will lose my helper of course, but that is probably why God has sent me hospice. See, it all works out! Have a blessed day.

Blueberry Lemon Bundt Cake
Emily made this yummy blueberry lemon cake last night. I had purchased some organic frozen blueberries from Azure and we used those. The cake was not only delicious but pretty too ....

Blueberry Lemon Bundt Cake
Crystal Miller
1 cup butter
1 ¾ cups cane juice crystals
4 eggs
2 T lemon juice
¼ t lemon extract
1 t vanilla
2 ¾ cups whole wheat pastry flour
¼ t baking powder
¼ t salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 ¼ cups blueberries, fresh or frozen, tossed with 1 T ww pastry flour
Glaze
1 ½ cups powdered sucanat (powdered sugar would work too)
3 T lemon juice
1 T maple syrup
In a mixer combine butter and cane juice crystals and beat until fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add lemon juice, lemon extract, and vanilla and mix until all is well combined.
In a smaller bowl combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add this to the butter/cane juice crystal mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Mixing well after each addition. When all is combined mix for 2 more minutes.
Fold in blueberries. Grease and flour a 12 cup bundt pan. Spoon batter into pan. Bake at 350 for 50 minutes or until a toothpick or fork inserted in the center comes out clean.
When the cake has finished baking let it cool on a wire rack for 20 minutes. Then run a knife around the edges of the pan to make sure it is loosened. Put a dinner plate over the top of the pan and flip the cake over so it is sitting on the dinner plate. Allow to cool completely.
To make glaze, mix all ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle glaze over the completely cooled cake... serve and enjoy!
Happy Monday
We spent the weekend working on furniture projects. So very frustrating when we spent high dollar on a certain primer and sanded diligently, then it still didn't adhere! Such is life. Now we're in the spraying process, and then waxing afterwards. ITs working!
Son2 is home from summer visitation with his natural dad so we're thrilled to have everyone home!
Today's chores are laundry, completing the furniture we began, moving it to the spaces chosen and reorganizing what goes in them!
Be blessed! God has promised us a life we can only imagine if we follow HIm! The covenant with Abraham is true for us today!
Sweetie

getting things done
We left the kids at my parents house last Thursday morning. We spent Wed night at my SILs where we had a BBQ, fireworks, and homemade ice cream. lots of fun. So Thurs morning, we dropped off the two eldest (Bug, 6 and Bear, 4) for a week at grandma's. nothing more fun than that! We ot home Thursday evening - we spent the day running around Salt Lake doing errands easier done without children in tow.
Friday I started the cleaning.
I cleaned the basement. reorganized the storage room, moving the paper goods (kleenex, TP, diapers etc) to the top of the kids' closet - it was just empty space collecting junk. this freed up room on my shelves for the food storage I was reduced to placing on the floor for lack of room! hehehe.
I straightened the "moving box" room - you know , the room with all the moving boxes we haven't unpacked after almost 2 years. LOL! maybe I should just toss those unopened at this point.
I cleaned the book room - found 2 socks. cleaned the old toy closet under the stairs. found 4 socks, including 2 church socks. that boy is hopeless with socks. I just bought him a dozen pair of socks. last laundry day, he had 4 pair.
I then moved up the stairs.
On Satuday I cleaned the couch room, including washing the couch covers (1 sock) and the family room (where all the toys are now). I also did the entry, the hallway and the laundry room (no socks).
Yesterday I cleaned the school corner and cubbies. No socks, but a lot of garbage, markers-without-lids, crayons, and some wipies.
I also straitened the toy cupboard where we keep the play-do, dominoes, stickers, puzzles, etc. and the kitchen (which had gotten very filthy since I was neglecting to clean that while I purged the rest of the house.)
Now I have all day today to clean my office. ugh. there was a reason I left that for last. sigh. oh, and I need to go do some gardening. I should do that earlier than later so that it is not too hot.
anyway, have a great day.
