This Christmas Season, it seems as though I've been reflecting on so many things. I've been decorating our townhome and working different things into our decorating that look so homey. Upon getting settled here again in Central NY, what I've been reflecting on most, is tradition.
This year, I get to spend time with my parents. Especially those fun times shopping with mom and spending time with her. Learning from her and dad, the things that made Christmas complete.
This year, we're taking a more simplistic approach. We have forgone the Christmas tree because our Jack Russell max, has figured out how to get loose from his cage while we are gone. For safety reasons, since we are without children, we've decided to have just our tiny table top tree and decorate with simplicty for the Holidays.
Which brings me to my FAVORITE memory as a child. I remember living upstairs from my paternal grandparents. Those years were so wonderful to me. I got time to spend with my grandparents, had my parents whenever I needed them, my aunt lived downstairs with grandma and dot (otherwise known as my grandfather) and my uncle gregg had his own place, but came back for Christmas with a BIG ol live Christmas tree, which He and His brothers (which included my dad sometimes) and their dad would bring home. The excitement I had as a little girl when they brought the BIGGEST tree I'd ever seen where the top of the tree poked at the ceiling was beyond my own imagination. I remember them putting the lights on the tree, decorating it and my favorite moment each year was to crawl underneath it with Aunt Lori's lastest cat dressed up in my little doll clothes, and I would lie down and dream of who'd I'd become and the love I would share with the family who is my extended family.
There are so many smells I remember that day under the tree. The smell of pine, Gram making coffee in the kitchen, the sounds of everyone around me talking so that it filled the house. I remember my cousins who came by with my Uncle Earl and Aunt Sue. We'd sit atop grams long record playing credenza and listen to Elvin and the Chipmunks ...you know, the record with the seethrough green.
The memories I have are so many....yet they live in my heart and my mind to share the legacy my parents and grandparents...as well as Aunts and Uncles who handed them down. Family is a gift I've come to cherish.....those dreams under the tree meant so much and I'll cherish them forever, just as I will each Christmas Eve with moms side, and Christmas with Dads side, our immediate family and Dougs.
I can't wait for Doug and I to finally bring our forever child home, wherever they may be. It may take time, but I know that one day, the child we have prayed for, for so long, will have that same connection with an extended family who will love them as much as Doug and I will.

huh. I have missed your return to our community! you have been back for a long time and I didn't even know it! Welcome back, and I do hope you are enjoying my other home - upstate NY. if I pause, I can almost smell the winter air!
I love how it is smells we remember most - a smell will take us back so much quicker than any other sense. thank you for sharing your Christmas memories.
