*** Is there Country in New York? ***
Monday, September 8, 2008

When People think of New York State, they think New York City. When someone asks where I'm from and I mention I'm from New York, their assumption is I'm from the Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. That I have no idea how to drive a car, am guilty by association as an elitist or Self-Centered Money-hungry love-to-work baracooda that lives for runway clothes or broadway.
What people are most surprised at, is New York is built around A whole lot of Forest and farmland. The Cities in NYS take up 6,241 acres. The rest is Forest Cover, which takes up 18,641 acres, Timberland that takes up 15,405 acres, Forest Reserve which also takes up 2,953, Urban Forestland that takes up only 99 acres, and finally Farmland which is 5,341 acres of New York State Land.
New York State is a wealth of beauty, especially in the fall when the leaves turn and it has SO many beautiful falls and lakes. The Adirondack Mountains is a beauty. The Daks, as the locals call it, not only holds alot of our forestland, but also some of the best lakes and islands around. Hiking, fishing, biking, skiing and just getting away from it all is why people from all over the nation come to the Daks to hide away from it all.
I'm quite fond of "The Fingerlakes". It is here, where my husband and I reside. I was born and raised in the Fingerlakes region and absolutely love the lakes, rivers, wineries, and collages of beauty that surround this area. There is truely nothing like it and the kindness of people who reside here.
Moving back here from Ohio last year, it took me some time to get back into the swing of things, The winters in Central NY tend to be pretty cold and snowy. Our first winter here last year resulted in a very light winter season. It was cold, but not a whole lot of snow fall.
Ask anyone here the year before and they would have told you about the HUGE snowstorm that pummeled the snowbelt so bad, they had to literally climb their rooftops like santa and shovel snow off them. Often-times being careful not to get too excited and jump the snow below, even though it was high and billowy, it was still hard to the ground.
I'm proud of where I was born and beauty that surrounds me each day. Even when winter comes and many animals and living plants have gone to bed for the season, there is always something beautiful that engulfs each season here in Central, Upstate and Downstate New York, that if we lived anywhere else, we wouldn't be able to enjoy just how great Gods creation really is and how as Ecclesiastes 3 puts it, there is a time and season over everything under heaven.
Blessings dear Friends!

So true! I have friends in PA. and they thought I was a New York City girl! There are lots of small towns here and I usually say I`m from upstate New york so people will see that it`s not all about The City. I love the change of seasons which I think is the prettiest thing going!

Oh Yes! It's just beautiful.
I think one of my favorite places as a teenage was Skaneateles NY. I'd constantly grab a cuppa green mountain coffee at the shop (where the chef makes chocolates who used to work for the Clintons in the White House).
Then I'd walk down the pier and stare at the stars.
In the winter you'll find ice fishermen. I haven't had the guts to go on the ice to take pics, but it sure is funny to see them.
Close to Christmastime the townfolks dress up like characters from Dickens book and walk the streets.
Yes, it's all too beautiful.

I also grew up in New York (Long Island). We spent a great deal of time upstate New York north of Albany in the summers. It is truly beautiful up there with all the farms. My parents especially loved going upstate for a ride in the fall to look at the changing of the leaves. They would drive 4-5 hours and turn around and come home, all this to look at the leaves. New York has so many special memories.

Your thoughts on NYS are right on. The perceptions you state are right on too. I grew up in Northern NY and when I moved away, I was amazed at the perceptions. Your acreages by land cover class are not even remotely correct. You might want to check your source. --Brian

Hi and welcome Brian.
Unfortunately if my acreages are wrong, it's from NYS Land and Forestry themselves. It's right from their mouths at ESFPA.org.
If you have more accurate information I would love you to post it though so others would have the updated correct information based on your finds.
Blessings!

Tuesday, September 9, 2008 - I'm a NY Girl too

I grew up in Pulaski, NY (smack in the middle between Syracuse and Watertown) where all the salmon fisherman flock every year. Just reading you talk about "home" -- NY makes me miss it even more and I was just home in July. I'm always amazed at how simply beautiful NY really is with all the green pastures, the rolling hills and the simplicity of life. While I'd love to have a white Christmas once again, I remember too well those "squalls" of the winter. Thank you for helping to educate everyone that there is more to New York, than the city.

I grew up in the Finger Lakes region of NYS also...first living in Horseheads, then we moved to our dairy farm in Watkins Glen.
Yes, when my parents moved us to SW FL, most thought if I was from NY, it had to be NYC. Now that I live in TN, they still think that. I want to take them all to MY New York and show them that there is something better than the Big Apple to NY! :)
I was back there this summer for my uncle's funeral...and it's still as beautiful as ever.
Might convince my hubby to move there if the taxes and homeschool laws weren't so awful....but...given those two strikes against NY as well as the cold winters (my hubby is a Florida cracker..born and raised in SW FL)....and he's not so sure he could handle the winters there.
Thanks for showing others that there is SO much more to NY than NYC. Your photo reminded me of the gorge in Watkins...
Blessings to you!
