Hmmm....???

We are really enjoying our Sunday School lessons. Currently, we are in Genesis, studying about Abraham and Sarah. I try to think how I would feel if God had promised to give me and my husband a child as He had promised Abraham and Sarah...and the long time they waited for that promise to be fulfilled. And to be at such an age when He again told Abraham of what was to come.

Sarah laughed. I don't think it was a mocking laugh..but a "what"? laugh...after all, she was 90 years old and Abraham was 100! They had never had a child. The Bible tells us her body no longer worked as a woman's body should. She had never been blessed with a child.  And she heard this...and laughed. Her response was that now she should have pleasure?!

At this point, two ladies in our class made comments that just hurt my heart. One said "Take me now!" The other said "Oh no!"...among a few other comments. What hurt was that they were taking a blessing from God and saying, no way, I don't want that!

I hear so many, many women with that same attitude. They want God's blessings, but not if it means more children. WHY???

Why do we want the Lord to be in control...but not in the area of children? Why do some women treat children as an almost curse rather than the incredible blessing that they are? Why do we want to control the size of our family, rather than letting the Lord do that? Why do some see large families and shake their heads?

Sure, our miscarriage earlier this year probably makes this all the more "to the surface" for me....I still can't stop thinking about how old our little one would be right now...we'd have a newborn in our family...and I'm sure missing him.

But, even without those thoughts, this just hurts my heart. To think that a parent doesn't want any more babes....why? What does that say to the babes they do have?

Yes, I realize some have physical reasons why they should limit their pregnancies...I'm not talking about those women. I'm talking about women who don't have medical issues. Women who just don't want to be bothered. Women who see more children as a burden.

So, back to Abraham and Sarah, God did indeed give a 90 year old woman a baby. And look at all that followed!!! What are we turning away? What blessing is to come from "another" child that we'll never know because we chose not to let God have His way?

I am sorry you were hurt. I have felt this way many times. It is hard, especially after a miscarriage. Looking back it isn't hard to see the blessings at all from all of my children. I just pray for those who have those kinds of comments.

This is so sad...... and so prevalent in our society today - in Christian cirles too !!! So few are "open" to having more........... our church was once that most had large families..... no longer......... so sad.......
