Hmmmm.....animals....

So, I couldn't sleep the night before last and as browsing the internet..and remembered the family cow board.

I began reading the posts...and saw one where a man was pinned by his milk cow and thought I should post about my recent experience with Gentle. My hope was that I could make others aware of the potential of this happening.

I wrote out my post, detailing what happened. Saying how Gentle hadn't acted like this...that she had been living up to her name. That she knocked me down, reared up on her hind legs and stomped on my face. That she was not in heat.

The responses I received were quite disappointing. They had never heard of a cow doing that. She must have been in heat. Or, this one...she must have eaten a noxious weed. Yeah, right, Gentle was high when she lost her mind and did this!   I responded about my personal experience with cows..that I was not a newbie to cows, having been raised on a dairy farm. I was to get over my fear and just deal with it. Okay...well....perhaps...someday....but the images are all too real for me right now. Does this affect Gentle? Of course it does. Was it a real possibility that she could have done much more damage? Of course there was! How do you just "get over it"???

My concern was that this board is directed at family cow owners, not experienced dairy men. They are like us, one family cow....and many are brand new to having cows.

I don't plan to post any further on the subject there. My prayer is that at least one person took me seriously and will treat their cows with more respect...for the damage they can do in an instant. Having cows is a great thing. I am so thankful for the farm we have here. And having a milk cow is a great thing. But, always keep in mind that this animal weighs about 1,000 pounds and could crush you. They are still animals...and unpredictable. I believe Gentle just did not want to do what I wanted her to....she got cocky and showed her power. She didn't go after me once I got up....she had accomplished what she wanted...I was leaving her alone.

If you have cows...or any other animal....please always keep in mind that they are just that....animals......

I think it was great you were trying to help others on that board....I'm so sorry they were critical of you.

Dear Blogging friend,

I am truly sorry you have felt that some here have not undrestood what you have been thru. I have been reading your blog since your accident and have truly felt awful that you have had to go thru this!
Cows are HUGE animals! There is no doubt about it and I would think they could get spooked or just plain stubborn and kick.......
Whatever the reason, I am sorry you got hurt and I do sincerely hope that you are able to heal soon.
