Abundant Blessings Homestead

A reminder of why we love living here...

We had a "situation" here this week....one that has re-affirmed our reason for moving here...(well, one of the reasons!)...Toby always says that we came here and fell in love with the area, we moved here because of the people.

The cows came back down from the back hill today...we had put them up there last Sunday. They had come down for minerals most every day, but had not for the last two days. Thomas went up to look for them, and found everyone but Beef (our bull) and Cheeseburger (our young bull destined for the freezer). We figured they were just lagging behind....

Today, when we came home from tending our friend's garden, the cows were all down here except for Beef. We planned to put them in another front pasture today anyhow. So Thomas and I set up new fence, moved the charger and all that....and moved the cows over there.

When Toby got home, we went for a walk looking for Beef. He was no where to be found. But, we did find one section of the fence was knocked down...giving the cows access to the way back pasture....not where we wanted them..... We got a little worried...so off to the way back we went. Now, this was quite a hike! Up and down hills, in blackberry bushes (ugh...I have no use for them!!) and all over..no sign of Beef. At the very back of our property, we found a section of fence that the top barbed wire had been cut...and the net wire was knocked down. Toby said it didn't look like it had been that way long....not a good sign.

The land behind us is owned by a banker in another town...he has cows on his land, but not much else. There are hills as far as the eye can see...and no sign of cows. We thought perhaps Beef went to visit the ladies of that herd....or something..not sure...but he wasn't anywhere we were...and we covered alot of territory. It wouldn't surprise me if we walked 3 miles this afternoon. He may be here...just down in the gulley...or he may not. He may have been in the blackberry bushes....the really tall ones that desperately need to be mowed down.... We just didn't know.

Toby did some calling when we came inside. Our next door neighbor had cows in his yard one day (and they weren't ours!) and found out who had the cows on the land behind both of us. Turns out, the man who owns the land leases it to a local man. He gave us his number. The next call was to our across the road neighbor who knows everyone in this area. :)  He said he'd be happy to help...and that the man with the cows was a nice man.

Then Toby called the man with the cows (sounds kinda like Curious George, eh? The man with the yellow hat?! ) He told us that he'd round up all of his cows and see if Beef was with them the next day. About 6pm the next day, he came here and told us that Beef was indeed with his cows. Did we want him to bring him home or did we want to get him ourselvs? Oh my, yes please bring him home!!!!

About 30 minutes later, Beef was reunited with his ladies. Toby offered to pay the man..he would only take $20. What an incredible blessing!

So, a new friend made....a bull returned home...a good end to our saga.

See, the people....they are so genuine. They are giving. They are helpful. Sure, there are probably some who are not this way...but the folks we have met are definitely this way. From the friend who moved a log from our creek before we were even moved here, to the friend who helped remodel our upstairs all last summer, to the friends who helped comfort us when we lost our babe, to this new friend. So many....and all so giving. We are definitely abundantly blessed!!!!

What an awesome story!
If I ever get a cow, I am going to name her "Milkshake" and every morning when I go out to milk her, I am gonna smack her on the butt and give her a good shake to say "Hello"!!

Indeed, living out in the way outs provides us the opportunity to get to know 'real' people.

I'm so glad Beef was found and I'm so glad I get to know some of the nice people around there, like you! God bless!
