College.....not yet....and a rant....

{ 06:59, Thursday, June 14, 2007 } { Posted in Thoughts } { 5 comments } { Link }

We have decided to wait a bit on Honey starting college. The cost is a bit too much for us to swallow. We would be left with over $10,000 in student loans!  A bit too large of a debt to walk into....

We will be looking for a school within Tennessee so that he might get a HOPE scholarship to help fund this education. Or a school that is more reasonably priced....

Speaking of the HOPE Scholarship....I heard on the news last night..while waiting for the weather report....that our illustrious governer, Phil Bredesen, thinks the GPA required to maintain that HOPE scholarship should be lowered. Why??? Because too many students are losing their scholarships because they cannot maintain a 3.0 GPA. Now, mind you, a 3.0 GPA is a B average....not perfect scores...So, yep, that's the answer....lower the standards! No sense in aspiring to higher things...just dumb it all down. That way, everyone can be equal and qualify for a free education. But, what good is an education that is dumbed down?????

Sorry, got off on a little tangent there. I just find it incredible that instead of pushing students to perform to the best of their abilities...and encourage that..and reward that....it's better to lower the standard so that more students qualify. What good will a college degree be if the standards are so low that anyone can attain one????

I'm off now to get some work done around here. Thomas and Natalie are finished with their school work for this year. Rebecca is nearly done...just some math and science to finish. I'm going to sort through Natalie and Mary's drawers today and re-organize them....adding in some really cute clothes given to us by my friend!

The book "College Without Compromise" by Scott and Kris Wrightman.
WHAT an excellent tool. Shows you how to use dual credits, shows you how to take CLEP tests and 'test out of' so many classes......it is an amazing tool that greatly reduces the amount of money needed to go to college!!

As far as 'lowering the GPA'......satan is droning us into mediocrity so that when the anti-Christ arrives, we will be wowed and in awe of him because we are so used to everyone being 'equal'. This is the devil lulling us to sleep.

It is sad to know that,what happend to parents that require their children to push themselves to the do the best they can!? I just don't understand how this can be with some people. I spoke with a teacher one day on my walk and we were talking about how the chldren behave in the schools nowadays. That they outright cuss and get in the faces of the teachers and principles. That they don't care if they get in trouble or kicked out. That so many are on drugs or their parents are so they don't care what they are doing. It's sad to think that some people bring children into this world and then just stop caring. I just truly don't understand this.... how you can have a part of you in your arms and then not want to guide them through life.

Have ya'll thought about CLEP and DANTE tests? It costs about $85 and you earn college credit for the tests you pass.

This online school no longer accepts CLEP exams.... It does seem like a great program...but the cost is just too high....

Thanks for your comments!!!

And...I have no clue how parents can become so lax and uninterested in their children!!!!!

My dh spent about $10,000 going through a 4yr college, living at home. Now he wishes he had taken as many classes as possible at the community college where I went. It would have just been cheaper - he could have taken English 101 for about a third of the cost, then simply transfered it and finished up at the 4yr with his specialty classes he needed to be an engineer.

I hope you find something!

Blessings,
Ashley
