Little Town on the Prairie...?!

{ 04:51, Tuesday, January 17, 2006 } { 3 comments } { Link }
We are using the Prairie Primer for our studies (this is our 3rd year with it)...and are now in Little Town on the Prairie. As we were reading today, this paragraph really stood out to me..

"That was a happy time, for the garden was growing well, the corn and oats were thriving, the calf was weaned so that now there was skim-milk for cottage cheese and there was cream to make butter and butter-milk and best of all, Pa was earning so much money."

She went on to talk about how they could eat most everything from their own land. That next year, they could have a pig and chickens and would be able to supply their own meat in addition to all above.
Sounds so much like us here...we are all striving, in one way or another, to produce our own foods. I find myself saying some of the same things. We could grow a garden and put up our own food. When we have pigs, we will add one more meat type to our farm. We already have chickens, cows and goats. Pigs seem to be one of the missing parts of this farm. Adding in our own fresh produce...and a milk cow, there wouldn't be too many other things missing.
Once those things were in place, it would be time to start utilizing those items more...making soaps and lotions from milk...making butter and cheeses....no longer buying less than great produce at less than great prices....knowing that no chemicals went into either produce, meat or milk.

What a life that will be..and we are in the midst of it. It is sometimes necessary to look back to where we came from to see just how far we have come. I do wish this blog adventure had been open to me when we first moved...what a wonderful journal we could now have of our adventures! Those first months were so exciting! There was something changing and happening here every day. We had such zest and zeal for this endeavor.
We haven't lost the zeal...just toned it down a bit. Life is taking a bit of a different direction right now. Toby is working in town...for the first seven months of our life here, he was home. We so loved  that time. Working in town is necessary for now..but we all dream of a day when Daddy will be home full time again. Could it come from one of the above endeavors? Could a business actually be formed from doing these things that bring us such joy? We went into this farm life looking for ways to make money to keep Daddy home...and that method didn't work out. We are now shifting to more of a...find something we really enjoy doing and perhaps it will lead to such a wonderful life mindset....
I am reminded of the saying,
"Do what you love and the money will follow." Could it really be that simple?

I glean such insight and inspiration from reading other's blogs...all of us are at different points of this journey and it's refreshing to hear from those who are successfully doing it, and adds excitement to read of those just getting started. Thank you, one and all for taking the time to share your stories with the rest of us...you are an inspiration!!

Right now we have our own eggs (who'd have thought cooking w/eggs could so much fun LOL), milk from cows and goat and are making our own cheese.

Over the next few months we'll have chickens and pigs for the freezer. I'm So excited about the garden we'll be putting in! (Now I gotta learn how to can the produce :) ).

Blessings,
Tam

This is one of my favorite books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I wonder if this is the book that planted the homsteading seed in me, the desire to self sufficient! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
