Wednesday evening musings...

Well, good evening!
It has been a few days since I last blogged here. Life seems to be way too busy for winter time! Winter is supposed to be cozy time...too cold to do anything outside, so you don't feel guilty not going outside to do something! Oh, the chores get done daily..but the extra stuff...that takes a back seat sometimes. And lately, I haven't had the oomph to do much extra. My Honey hasn't been feeling well, so he doesn't have the desire to do alot after work.

Guess we need to get our ducks in a row...got a call from my brother the other night that they are bringing us pigs!!! We have wanted pigs since our move to the farm and are looking forward to adding them to our menagerie of animals. I can already taste that fresh pork! You know, if I said that to some of my non-homesteading friends, they would not be real thrilled with me...but I know you fellow homesteaders will completely understand!

We have a buck now for our two goats, Baby and Goatie (the children named them...so creative, my geniuses!) We searched for a buck to take our girls to and when that didn't work out, we bought our own. His name is a bit more creative... Bill Edward Goat...Bill E. Goat.... Thomas came up with that one. He spent his first night here getting butted around the barn. He finally proclaimed his place and is now accepted by the girls. Have they really "accepted" him...as in his buck advances? I don't know the answer to that...haven't witnessed it ourselves...sure hoping so! We have never tried goat's milk, but sure want to! And to make cheeses and soap! Then I'll feel like a real homesteader! When I grow up, I want to be like Crystal, at quiverfull. She is my inspiration! I've "known" Crystal online for a few years now...and been so in awe of watching her website Family Homestead, grow. She has a very active message board that is filled with other like minded ladies. I do love my morning routine of checking in with them all!
What else do we need to round out our farm? We have beef cows, goats, cats, and ducks. Soon to be added pigs. I am dreaming of a dog...but a small, lap dog. Not sure what breed would suit that desire. We had two brother puppies that we had to give away. They were the cutest mix of border collie and beagle. But, the beagle in them kept chasing and chewing on my ducks. Couldn't have that...and they spent quite alot of time in doggie jail because of it. I dream of this nice, docile, friendly, loving pet to sit on my lap and love on me. Daschunds have been recommended....along with pomeraninans and shi tzu. Where to begin this search? I don't want to take on a dog, just to have to give him up when it doesn't work out. If you love your small dog and have great success with him/her, leave me a comment to help me in my search, please!
Time for getting young'uns ready for bed. 3:30 am comes quite early. We have a meeting in town tomorrow and then some major grocery shopping.

Have a great evening!

Lap doggies...

I had a mini dach for about 4 years and she was run over. She was so much company for me after my husband died - she was definitely a "get in your lap and cuddle dog" - I went for 2 years after she died wondering if I should get another - I finally did about a week ago - she is 2 years old - a red mini dach Gidget - I am having the best time with her - she loves to be loved on.
Good Luck on your search - let us know what you decide!!

Kay,
I didn't mention the chickens...we have 35 laying hens. Rebecca and Thomas will be doing the 4-H poultry project...adding 50 new chicks to our farm soon. Once they get to laying stage, we will be puttig the 35 current hens in the freezer...they are nearly 2 years old and production has sure waned lately.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!!

Blessings,
Laurie

Hey, this is Tiffani from the homestead. I just wanted to give you a dog reccomendation. I have a miniature pomeranian. He's the sweetest thing. He actually lives with my grandma, she didn't want him when I moved in and she wouldn't let me take him when I moved out! He keeps her company and only barks if the doorbell or phone rings. They are very loyal and affectionate. They are also good with kids f they are raised with them. Hope this helps in your decision making process.
