Apple Dumplings

With fall on my mind from various websites and blogs and apples from our tree and the neighbor I was thinking of my mom's homemade apple dumplings. I don't have a paper copy of the recipe so I looked it up online to find a similar one. This website was the closest to it. It has a clear recipe with pictures and videos. The only thing done differently was my mom did not add baking powder but used a piedough type of dough for it. If I recall correctly she got the recipe from my dad's mom who was a great cook. She even ran a small diner/restaurant besides selling things to take out too. She was way head of her time I guess. The place was called the Bluebird I believe and it was located in Danville Illinois.

First I decided to peel and chop the apples outside to enjoy the fresh air and also to watch my littlest grandson playing. He needs an eye on him constantly or he would go into the road or off into the cornfields. But as the rest of the family started coming out to work in the yard the pirate bugs were horrendous. It wasn't long before we literally ran into the house and slammed the door. It took me a good half hour for the pain to wear off and longer for the itching. We stayed in all day because of them. They are actually on the screens right now threatening to come in laughing at me. I kid you not. Well, anyway, back to the dumplings.

Here is a huge bowl of cut up apples. Fruit fresh was added but no sugar.

I made the sauce on the stove to pour over the dumplings before baking. This is just half sugar and half water with some cinnamon. Boil it and add a couple tblsp. of butter. It does not get real thick.

I made the dough with the baking powder this time.

Then I rolled it out and cut into 5 pieces. I should have spread it more as the recipe could make 6. It was very tender and was breaking as I folded it into dumplings.

I baked it for 35 minutes as stated in the recipe for 350 degrees instead. Here they are ready to go with the syrup poured over it already. I greased the dish first.

Mmmmm good!

The leftover apples were cooked on the stove for either applesauce or apple butter tomorrow.

Blessings.

Oh boy do those look good! I made chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast but nothing else today. My husband and I went out for a very big lunch.
I'm going apple picking one day next week and I think I'll be back here to get your recipe.
