Hectic Heaven

Meandering thoughts

I didnt realize that my last post was on Saturday, we had a nice celebration of my daughters birthday, once we got  Pam (the goat) back on the right side of the fence.   Sunday was kind of a quiet day just relaxed alot.  I did weed the garden bed a bit.  I am going to start taking a wheel barrow load of  manure from the barn, out to the garden plot every day,  so by the time its time to plant it will be ready to go, and I wont be trying to do it all in one day.

I have been working on getting our finances under control and being a little more frugal in our day to day lives... one thing I have noticed over the last little bit, is that 9 chickens are going thru 25 lbs of feed in about 4 days... I have since found information that they need about 1/4 of a lb a day per chicken thats roughly 2 1/2 lbs a day.. divided by 25 means they should be getting about 10 days out of a bag.   Wild birds are eating the rest... so I am going to close things down and  feed them daily so they will be getting the food not the wild birds as much..

As far as our own food consumtion goes I am trying to be less wastefull and do cooking more from scratch.  I plan on growing a nice garden this summer and canning some of it which will help.

Monday our muzzleloading gun club had their monthly meeting,  I got an order for a gun strap, so I need to warp the inkle loom today.. yesterday I was called into the high school to work so I didnt get it done yesterday.

I need to make a batch of soap today... lavender, basil lime and probably sandalwood.   I usually make one BIG batch and then that is divided into three containers and then poured into molds each producing about16 bars of soap...  well better get busy.. have a good day all

Chicken feed

You might be able to keep your hens locked up and feed them (with good fresh water) in the morning, then let them out after noon and let them roam, then. Most of the eggs will be laid, so they will be forced to lay then and not hide them somewhere. That way birds won't get into the feed. You ARE going through a lot of feed!
