I have been doing the inkle weaving since last summer.. DH built me the loom I use now...my daughter got interested in weaving in Oct. when she saw the looms the local weavers guild had set up at the harvest festival, we had our primitive camp set up so folks could see what we do, anyway she came to visit and then went to look around.. we stopped at the weaving booth and they had some set up to try so she did... she wanted to try the floor loom so the lady that was working it let her have a go at it... she never left! That lady has taken her under her wing and has shown her quite alot...the first of Jan we (daughter and I ) took a beginning weaving class, it covered all parts of weaving...very interesting and exciting.....
Now to the dish towels, this is actually my very first project after the class projects...I guess I should say the first on on my own.... It has taken me forever to get the loom warped because of mistakes I made... the actual weaving goes very fast... in fact way to fast lol... to answer spinning Grandma's question I am using 8/2 cotton and the colors (brown and green) are cottolin I warped 340 ends two are floater selveges at 4.5 yards (should make about 4 towels). They should be about 13.5 wide and about 20 inches long when done. The towels are turning out nicley.. I will post a picture of them once they are finished...
The sun is still shining and no sign of snow or rain yet.. but the air is MUCH cooler then it has been....my hens are deciding its time to get back to work, I found my first egg today...I know I could put a light in the coop but dont really like forcing nature...also another way would be to make sure to get a few new hens each spring that mature before the days start getting shorter I think it is... then they start laying about Aug and go thru the winter and the next spring before stopping for their first molt... These hens I have right now are about 2 or 3..I have a nice little flock of buff orphingtons pretty good layers and they are also good for meat.. they are considered a dual purpose breed.. There are a couple of them that have tried to set in the past... maybe I will let them hatch some out this year for replacing some of the older hens and the freezer... I have also thought about getting a few turkeys again this year... its been a few years.. and I miss the taste of home grown turkeys...and they love the scraps from canning:>
I am not the only one that thinks spring should be here, The momma canary thinks it already time to nest..she is using the feed cup at the moments.. this has been rather perplexing for pappa bird, I have in the past raised a couple of set of canary's they are alot of fun to watch and such wonderful little parents.... well enough rambling have a wonderful rest of your day...
simple pleasures: watching the chickens pick at the corn...
