Frugal Christmas a challenge of sorts

07:22, 2008-Nov-11 .. 4 comments .. Link

This year money is tight as  I suspect it is with alot of folks... I am challenging myself to cut down drastically on what I spend for gifts...I am leaing towards making most of  the gifts on my list... Here is a challenge if you wish to take it...  Look around your house.. in your craft closet, fabric stashes, fiber stashes,  what gifts  could you make using what you have or without buying much. What I found

Several skeins of  sugar n cream yarn... each one will make three scrubby style dish rags

a couple yards of  pretty denim material... a couple of reusable grocery bags...

pretty calico prints,  pot holder batting,  some pretty potholders.. I have a neat pattern that  kind of looks like a lady bug... aprons, rendezvous shirts

weaving supplies... I could make dish towels,  guitar straps,  sashes, hat bands,

hand spun  yarn,   shawls, scarves , since I dont knit I am kind of limited here...

polar fleece,  some slippers... not much on hand. enough for 3 pair

masa, beef, chicken,   homemade tamales

I cant think of any thing else...whats in your closet ?    and if you have other thoughts using what I posted.. please leave the ideas in the comments section... :>

I am going to use pictures I have here to do these for grandparents and aunts and uncles..... Since I am laid up with a broken leg i should have no problems getting it done.. LOL

Good for you, using what you have!!!!
Could you post directions for making guitar straps? I have two guitar players in my family.
Thanks,
Melanie

Easy kids toys would be, (for boys): little wood rubber band guns or a homemade slingshot (a small target completes the gift well). If you have two children you could include different games, such as hit 3 times your dead and you have to get the scarf from Mollys room into the living room w/out getting killed. For girls, a cardboard doll house furnished with nick knacks from around the house is quiet appealing. Really fancy dress-up dresses or cloth dolls are time tested treasures too.

Basically, the wooden, old-time, (expensive!!) toys that you see in those flyers and catalogs that they keep sending you in the mail, ;-), can be easily reproduced at home for next to nothing.

Have fun and do enjoy your day today!! :-)

I bought some flannel sheets at the thrift store and they'll soon be new pj pants for everyone.
I think all of my homespun yarn will be going to mittens and socks.
Let's get busy. :)
Love,
Rhonda
