Opps, I tried, fair time, 4H.

I tried the buy your food and stuff you need for a year , but at a smaller size of 2 weeks. Opps, it did not work. I found out that my youngest daughter might be allergic to wheat , so to make a long story short I had to share my wheat free food with her and well 2 people eating my wheat free food went fast!!!! I also found out that the food for life bread I normaly get is falling apart so we are not buying it anymore. I pay $3.99 a loaf , to me it is not worth it any more if I can't eat it like I want. We are making bread at home now, I won 1st place at our la.county with a wheat free bread, but it takes so long to make, and it is so hot. We have been in the 100's out. The heat with the animals is not going good. We water the animals all day long. The chickens are still laying just not as good, we are getting 13 eggs a day instead of 27a day. We also have the fair coming up this week. The girls are taking 2 pigs they raised for it, they are good looking pigs. But , we do not know about doing the 4 H next year, this group is to groupy like high school. My girls gave a lot of talks last year , and the 4 h does not want to count them because it is too many, lets just say they gave 7 talks instead of how many they did. My girls gave over 100 talks each. We droped out of the horse club with the 4h due to if you were not the leaders child or a favorite child you were treated different. They let the rules slide like wearing a helmet for horse events , or share horses with other members, I feel that all children should be treated the same and it is not that way. The girls want to show pigs still but it will be in open classes not 4h. I will post on how things go at the fair latter in the week. God bless mj

well, with 4H, you are not the first person i have heard to have had issues such as you mentioned. what a shame for your girls.

i have been thinking on the yearly food buying. my biggest issue is, where would i store it all. down here in fl you have to freeze your flour, etc before you can store it; to prevent bugs, and even that has proven not a fool proof solution. even if i could store it without having to pitch it, where would i store enough for a year? still thinking.

FYI on flour, you can put spearmint gum in it to keep out bugs. My mom did this for years when I was young. You have to change the gum every six months or so. We had a flour mill nearby and used to buy in bulk is how I know. :) Now it's gone. :(
Cornish rock chickens are a good investment. Last year, my mom did 50, I think. I put them up for her in exchange for 12, which me and dh don't eat chicken on a consistant basis, but we need to, because we have lots left! My mom has some left as well, and she's feeding four. But she has beef, ect as well. Most important tip: Raise them in early spring, so that when they are ready to put up, it's still chilly, or in fall, for the same reason. Which means planning ahead for 6-8 weeks. Your last bird will probably be gone at 8 weeks, they grow so fast. But you do not want to be putting up chickens in the heat of the summer. Trust me. lol :)
