Thoughts from Today's Devotions
As I was reading I Samuel 12-14 today these thoughts came across my mind:
- The people did a foolish and wicked thing in asking for a king, not just asking, but b)eing persistent that it would happen and that they would have their own way even when Samuel warned them that it would not be pleasant and that they were really rejecting God as their leader. (How many times have I just insisted that God give me my own way when it may not have been His way at all! I need to be sensitive to the Lord's leading and ask Him to direct me in my prayer life and give me wisdom in what I ask for)
- God is so merciful. Even in their wickedness, they were promised that God would not leave them if they obeyed His commands. (God is merciful to me over and over even after I have rebelled and turned aside from his commands. I am so glad that He has promised never to leave me nor forsake me!)
- Samuel realized it would be sin in ceasing to pray for Israel. V23 Have I given up many times in praying for individuals, our nation? Am I careful to teach the good and right way? I should speak up for what is good and right!
- If we consider what great things the Lord has done for us, it will cause us to fear Him and serve Him in truth with all our hearts. I am sure I have not considered enough God's goodness to me.
- Saul acted foolishly (Ch.13:9&13) in offering his own offering. Because of it, he missed out on God's long term blessing of having his kingdom established. (Have I missed God's blessings because of foolish acts and not obeying God's commands?)
- God said He would choose a person after His own hear. v14 (Am I person after God's own heart?) I have been thinking of ways that I might become more of that person:
- be a person of prayer
- meditate on God's Word
- Give continual praise to God almighty, my creator
- speak the truth in love
- Seek Him and allow Him to take care of my daily needs
- present my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God
- consider what great things He has done for me!
- Give thanks in all things
- Think on pure, lovely, holy, righteous things
- love the unlovely, be merciful, be soul conscious
These are just a few of the things I can be and do to be a person after His own heart. Living for the Lord must be done on a daily basis fully surrendering to Him and allowing Him to lead me as I walk in the Spirit.
“But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” (2Co 10:17)“But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I [am] the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these [things] I delight, saith the LORD.” (Jer 9:24)
Comforted for a Purpose
Trials in your life?
God can and will comfort us in all our tribulations and afflictions. The Holy Spirit comes alongside to help us face problems that arise. God permits pressures and trials so "that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead" (2 Corinthians 1:9) Our trials and tests give us the privilege of growing. Paul had known severe trials and all these helped him mature.
