Homeschoolers & Homesteaders...What's the Relationship?

I have an idea already, but would like YOUR opinions and thoughts, so...

What do you think the reasons are that so many homeschool families are also becoming homesteading families?

Hi Dalyn!

I think it's the home centered/family centered-ness of them that tie in so well together...and I just think they go hand in hand. :)

I agree that it is a family centered thing. We began homeschooling first because of a need to not seperate our family out for 8-10 hours a day and then it lead to a lifestyle of wanting to get back to the basics.

The two go hand in hand. It gives a family a sense of freedom and of being in charge of their own lives. ^..^

it's because it how thing were done in the Bible, raising animals, growing crops and gardens. I know this sounds kinda corny, but it's the best way I could explain it. Next time quiz me!
BTW, you wanna take another go at the HSB contest? You did pretty good on this one, I'm sure you'll do well over there too.

..it also goes hand in hand with living independent of "the world". Homeschoolers are "outside the box" - thus we are not as likely to follow the herd and many are returning to simpler lives and moving toward more independent lifestyles that ultimately leads to or includes the concepts of homesteading.

Great question to think about ~

For us, simplifying our life naturally led to all things home. I wanted to stop and smell the roses, and I sure didn't want my childen to miss out!

I think it has to do with wanting to be self-sufficient and also independent. We want to do things our way, and not how the world wants us to do things. We're drawn to the "old" ways and one of those thing is teaching our kids at home. We have the freedom and independence to teach our children what WE want then to know. To teach them our morals and standards, not those of the world.

2006-Feb-2 - For Us...

For us, it's a little bit different, but...not really. We homestead because we don't trust store food to nourish us the way it should. For some reason, this is not a conventional philosophy, but for us unconventional homeschoolers, it is quite a natural continuation of our "non-compliant" views. :-)

2006-Feb-2 - Backward

I'm a bit backward, I guess. My desire for homesteading (being steadfast @ home) brought me to a desire to homeschool. I realized the teacher @ school is getting the best part of my dds day and I get the crabby leftovers! I want things more simplified and I know my life would be a lot more simple if I wasn't rushing to get the dds to school every morning and rearranging the day and ds's nap to pick them up every afternoon. And then spending another 40 minutes on homework. When all is said and done we only really get 4 hours of family time a day before bedtime and that includes dinner with prep/clean up, and bathtime for 3. So to be steadfast at home- we need to 1st- be home and 2nd- make the most of our time at home together and homeschooling enhances that. No better way to teach than hands on!

Like many, I think it goes hand in hand. There is an education to be found in homesteading. Also, a deep appreciation of God's creations. I find a simplisitic life leaves a great opening to focus on God's will.
