"Things You Don't Hear Anymore"
Be sure to fill the ice trays. We're having company after while.
Quit slamming that screen door!
Close the windows. It looks like rain (don't I wish!). And bring in the
clothes off the line, too.
Don't forget to wind the clock before you go to bed.
And wash your feet before you go to bed. You've been barefooted all day.
Don't go outside to play with your good school clothes on.
Put a clean dish towel over the cake so the flies won't get on it.
Don't sit so close to the TV. It will hurt your eyes.
Go get a dollar out of my purse and go by the service station and get five
gallons of gas. (Dream on, brother, dream on.)
Y'all boys stay close. The car might not start. I'll need you to help push
it off.
Open the back door and see if we can get a breeze through here. It's hot.
Wash your neck before you come to the table. You have beads of dirt and
sweat under there.
Get out from under that sewing machine. You're pumping it and messing up
the thread.
And a universal question for mothers: Do you want me to get a switch?
No! I don't have ten cents for you to go to the show. Do you think money
grows on trees?
That dog is NOT coming in this house. I don't care how cold it is.
Don't cross your eyes. They'll get stuck!
Now don't forget your hand signals when you take your driving test. Left
arm straight out for a left turn; left arm bent up to the sky at the elbows
for a right turn and straight down when you are going to stop.
If you don't stop that crying, I'm going to give you something to cry about.
Don't you ask for something to eat when we get to Aunt Ruby's or I'll wear
you out.
Watch for the mailman. I want to mail this letter.
I've told you a hundred times. Roll up your pants legs when you ride the
bicycle. You've ruint another pair of pants.
