Grandma Rosie's Texas Home - My Garden

Grandma Rosie's Texas Home

Even though it is barely January, my head and heart are racing ahead to plan my garden.  Gardening in my part of the world can be difficult.  For instance, we are currently 19 in behind in rain for 2005.  Drought is very common in central Texas.  But my little patch of ground is tilled and ready for turnips, beet, onions, potatoes and greens.  We never know here when our last freeze might be!!  I will hold of until spring for my more tender veggies and herbs. Most likely around Easter, but it could be sooner or later than that.  It has been so warm this winter I expect my fruit trees to get fooled in blooming early and then get bit back by a nasty freeze later.  But I am a Texan through and through so I guess I will put up with it! .

Looking forward to reading more entries from you :)

We just moved to our homestead in early Nov. and I'm chomping at the bit to get my first "real" garden doing.

Blessings,
Tam

You know, I love Texas; my love, Roy, is from Elpaso, but, but he sure ain't a cowboy though !! {Oh well, I love him anyways !! LOL}

I want to start a garden this coming year, I haven't tilled the ground yet, when should I ?? I really can't wait, either !! I want to do some canning, too !! Is it hard??

Well I'm enjoying your blogger and I'll be back visiting again, soon !! Kelly

I've loved reading your postso far, and look forward to more!

I'd love to hear more about how you help homeschool your grandkids? This is something my parents would love to do, and I'd love some tips?

Hugs,
Lisa

• Sun 1 Jan 2006 - When to Till your Garden

Posted by GrandmaRosie
It depends on where you live. A good garden has been worked and tilled for several years. Adding as you go along lots of organic matter. Check with your local County Extention Agent for your county.

Canning!! One of my true loves. Best bet is to buy a copy of the Bell Blue Book at your local WalMart, ( if you a have WalMart, if not find it elsewhere) It will give you a lot of basic knowledge. Read now, don't wait until you are ready to can. Preparation is key. I will try to post more on this subject later.

• Sun 1 Jan 2006 - Homeschooling

All three of my daughters use the same Bible based curriculum. There are lots of good ones. I take the kids at least one day a week to give the moms a rest. I also find supplemental items to help them with what ever they are studying. I will be adding some homeschool links as I go along. I taught school for many years before I retired. I was not old enough to retire, but my girls were started to have children and needed a good Christian How To Manual ( ME ^..^) to help them get started. I am very close to my children and their families. I thank God for that. More Later! HUGS!!

Thanks for sharing your pictures! I to am thinking about my garden. Most times I love winter here in NH, but this year for some reason I long for March when I can start my seeds in doors and know that spring is not far away. ~ Rebecca

My Family is the greatest gift God has given me, second only to the Salvation provided me by Jesus Christ, God's son. I love to garden, we have a small garden for vegetables and herbs. A small orchard for growing our own fruit . I recently retired and am very involved in homeschooling my six grandchildren.
