what we got yesterdayThis is what I woke up to yesterday--UGH! I am NOT ready for this! I am never ready for it, but especially not the week before Thanksgiving!!
Emily's cookiesThursday was Emily's snack day in school. She wanted to take cookies again, so I made sourdough softies. They sort of taste like snickerdoodles, but they are SOOO soft and moist, and they have such a wonderful flavor! They are made with that Amish friendship bread starter... They were a big hit in her school, too. I took a container of them to my mom and dad, and my dad ate ALL of them with his coffee!
Dave's cookiesThese are actually from a mix, but I wanted everyone to see that when Dave says, "Hey woman, make me some cookies!" I get right in there and make them.. LOL
homemade turkey stockI made a turkey last Saturday, and on Tuesday I decided to make stock out of the bones. I had been keeping them in the fridge, and at my house we use up as much of everything as possible before throwing it away or recycling it... Here it is in the pot:
I put the turkey carcass, some halved onions, some celery stalks and carrots cut into big chunks, and a few garlic cloves. I also added a chicken bouillon cube for some extra flavor. I ended up with 7 pint containers and a small butter container of stock to use in soups this winter...
a good investmentThis is one of the best investments I ever made--a clothes drying rack! Now in winter I don't have to run my dryer much at all!! I actually bought 2 of them, so I will have enough to do 2 loadsof clothes at once if I need to. I have a wooden one, but htese metal ones are much nicer. I paid $15 each for them at work, but I will have them forever and they will save me money!
CONGRATULATIONSCongratulations to my beautiful sister and her wonderful family on the birth of their new little one... Greyson! He is adorable and healthy and my sister is AMAZING!! :)Also, Congratulations to my winner! #36 CHALLICE!!!!!!!! I will contact you about your prize!!! :) Have a wonderful weekend my friends! My Cup Runneth Over... CHRISTmas Questions Part IIGot this one from Jen... 1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? YES! lol Usually bags for friends and wrapping for family. Don't know why, it just ends up that way. My FAVORITE wrap is brown paper tied w/twine or raffia w/some sort of CHRISTmas Stampin' Up stamps.
2. Real tree or Artificial? We used to do the real ones, but I pick up quills ALL year, so we have used a fake one for years. Last year, however, we got the most wonderful tree!! It's very rustic - just the way I like it - it has just a touch of "snow" (so it doesn't look 'cheap') and pine cones and we put only vintage and rustic ornaments on it. LOVE IT! I hate to take it down!
3. When do you put up the tree? If not the day after Thanksgiving, then the weekend following.
5. Do you like eggnog? No.
6. Favorite gift received as a child? Hmmm...my Barbie Dream House. I'm old enough that it was the second edition, still cardboard, but it was WAY cool!!
7. Hardest person to buy for? My mom. She's very well off and has 2 of everything.
8. Easiest person to buy for? My dog, Maggie!
9. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes; it's the one my family has had since I was about 3 years old and is starting to fall apart. I'd like to get replacement Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus and a few animals from the company that does the wooden angels for all occasions (shoot, can't think of the name). While I'm at it ... I CAN'T STAND to see the wise men in a nativity scene!! They didn't find Jesus until He was 2 years old, for Pete's sake...so put them waaaaay over on the other side of the house that they can make a journey of it!
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Both. If I have your e-mail address, you'll probably get an e-mail; family and friends w/o e-mail get cards.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? OK...I'm serious here...no joke...My dear grandma was a very frugal gal, having lived through the Depression she was always thinking of USEFUL things to give. The first CHRISTmas we were married she gave us a can of Crisco w/a bow on top!! lol
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? White CHRISTmas.
13. When do you start shopping? Usually in December.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes. 'Nuff said.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? My mom's stuffing!
16. Lights on the tree? White.
17. Favorite Christmas song? O Holy Night and I Wonder as I Wander. I have a really beautiful arrangement of 'I Wonder...' that I worked out on my hammered dulcimer.
18.Travel at Christmas or stay home? We usually go to my mom's house.
19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer’s? Possibly...um...no.
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? A rustic star.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? We have our OWN family CHRISTmas on CHRISTmas Eve morning - when the girls were little we were always rushing all over the place and we weren't making OUR OWN memories and they couldn't enjoy their news clothes or toys. So, when our oldest was about 5 we started our own tradition on the day before.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year. The emphasis on Santa and stores putting up CHRISTmas - eh hem - I mean 'holiday' decorations BEFORE halloween!!
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Rustic, vintage.
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Didn't I answer that? My mom's stuffing.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? A digital camera. Unaswered Prayer? All of us have prayers we raise up to heaven that "seem" to appear go unanswered as of yet...... some of us have been praying for something for days, months and yes even years....... does God not hear us? This quote is for you.........and me. :) ~ gloria ~
" God's timing is not ours to command. If we do not start the fire with the first strike of our match, we must try again. God does hear our prayer, but He may not answer it at the precise time we have appointed in our own minds. Instead, He will reveal Himself to our seeking hearts, though not necessarily when and where we may expect. Therefore we have a need for perseverence and steadfast determination in our life of prayer. In the old days of flint, steel and brimstone matches, people had to strike the match again and again, perhaps even dozens of times, before they could get a spark to light their fire, and they were very thankful they finally succeeded. Should we not exercise the same kind of perverence and hope regarding heavenly things? When it comes to faith, we have more certainty of success than we could ever have had with flint and steel for we have God's promises as a foundation. May we, therefore never despair. God's time for mercy will come -- in fact, it has already come, if our time for believing has arrived. Ask in faith, without wavering, but never cease to petition the King simply because He has delayed His reply. Strike the match again and make sparks fly! Yet be sure to have your tinder ready, for you will get a fire before long. " ~~ Charles H. Spurgeon ~~ The Joy GiverI have been so busy this past week......from schooling the children ( there are 8 being schooled now!) and tending the home fires... that I have not had a moment to sit and blog.... and I also went into the city this week and that always takes a good chunk of my time ..........in the midst of the busyness, we have also had time to sing our praises to the Lord and rest in His beautiful promises in HIS word! As we enter into this week of Thanksgiving, I like to take time to remember those brave and faith filled souls who came from so far away to establish a colony where they could worship their God freely without being "dictated" how they should do so. They believed the Word of God was to be taught freely and not under the "banner" or "control" of some church........ oh, how I can relate to these brave souls! My journey to the Lord was somewhat of a pilgrimage in many ways! My family travelled over many miles to arrive to a place where God could teach us and show us His ways. So I do have a tender spot in my heart for those pilgrims who came to America searching for freedom to worship to their heart's content! This past week we have been learning a new hymn to sing for our Bible devotions. We recently learned the beautiful hymn: As the Deer.... if you don't know this lovely song, you so do need to become familiar with it's beautiful melody and even more beautiful lyrics! I have been hearing my children humming and singing this lovely song........ As the Deer Music & Lyrics by Martin Nystrom As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship You. Chorus: You alone are my strength , my shield; To you alone my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship You. You're my friend and You are my Brother, even though You are a King. I love you more than any other, so much more than anything. Chorus: I want You more than gold or silver, only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy giver, and the apple of my eye. Chorus Jesus really is the real JOY giver -- and the apple of my eye! He is what I long for and I need Him like my body needs water! I long to worship Him! I hope in this coming week ~ that you too will find time to worship the JOY giver!! Praising Him! gloria
