Shayna and JeffieDora and her family from church came by last night for me to worm and give their dogs a set of shots. It is so funny how people see things . Dora was watching Jeffie how he was with Michelle (she stopped by for a bit) and she also watched how Jeffie is with Shayna. Dora told me with tears in her eyes " Shayna is his mom" I gave a sad smile and said I know. She remembers them from church events and other home schooling events. Dora knows Shayna is his aunt (tea as he calls her) and that Shayna has raised him for a lot of his life. We are blessed that Shayna at 15 years old took on the roll. They have such a strong bond. He cries every time he has to go. Here are some of Shayna's senior pictures taken last year at this time. Shayna was 17 and Jeffie was 2.5. We bought the hole cd so we have the funny ones too:

Each day I will have a new prayer from the website in the previous post. Go there to see on join me here - whatever you do, please pray for God's will. My posts keep getting blocked and messed up but I am trying to stay diligent and so here goes... **************************************** For Members of the Media to Remain Open, Forthcoming and Truthful
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. Loving Lord, You are the God of all Truth, and there is nothing impure or false in You. You bring all things to light, and nothing is hidden from Your sight. Before You all things are laid bare and every detail, whether large or small is known. All praise and glory to You, O Mighty God! I ask You to move and work among the members of the media this day, O Lord, keeping them from any form of falsehood. Let them lift up only what is true in these campaigns, Lord, that as a nation we may be discerning as we consider those whom we will elect to the offices of our government. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Join me in praying for our Country and elections

Fab Friday
I say Fab because the weather is just that, fabulous! It is cool but not cold, the kind where you open up your windows and the breeze blows the curtains around, LOVE IT! Grinding was suppose to start today but they have pushed it back until Monday, which is OK with me. Hubby can take an extra weekend to relax before he starts working nonstop for the next three months. The money is great, but he gets tired of it after a month or so. I don't blame him either, I worked grinding several years in the scale house, and it does take a toll on you. Seven days a weeks for weeks and weeks. So for lunch hubby wants to go to his favorite eat out, Pizza Hut. I personally don't care for them but he loves it, so Pizza Hut it is. Then it's off to see mom for a bit at the home, a quick stop at the grocery store for a few items, and then home to wait for my dear friend Debbie who is coming for a weekend visit. With the holidays kicking up soon, we are getting a visit in before things get too hectic for visiting. So thats pretty much me weekend, chatting, swinging, porching, garage saleing, malling, eating out, and did I mention chatting. The guys will be doing some hunting. So I hope everyone else is going to have a great weekend ahead. Call you BFFs and chat some.
Root Cellar uh, I mean the Hobbit Hole, Re-visited

{ 06:36, Friday, October 10, 2008 } { Posted in Blessed be this homestead } { 12 comments } { Link } ![]() Good Morning! I hope you are all having a lovely start to your Friday! I am excited for the day. On Tuesday, we worked in the root cellar... or what my children are insisting we call the Hobbit Hole for a long while. My Dad came and helped show Shannon how to build some sturdy shelves to store our stockpile. My boys wanted in on the action. And since you can 'work' in nothing less than overalls, that was the choice of attire for the day. :) The littlest one lest be left out... He even came equipped with his own saw and hard hat. ;) Shelves were built across the back and down both sides. It is SO wonderful!!! I am so happy to have this finished and ready for use. Have a terrific weekend. Fill it with your family, laughter, smiles, hugs and kisses, snuggles, sips of hot cider, cozy quilts and love.With much love from me to you... I shoulda, but I didn'tdo anything with the last of the tomatoes today. We picked them and pulled the vines a few days ago. Hubby has mowed the garden and is working on the tiller to get it all worked up for the winter. Anyway, the tomatoes were top on the list for today, but I seemed to find enough other things to do all day. I really wanted some more canned and now that I have them, I can't seem to make myself get to them. Why is that? They are not real nice, most very small and some have bad spots, so I think I will make juice out of what I can salvage now. It will NEED to be done tomorrow as we will be gone all day Saturday. We will be going to an exotic sale Saturday, it is held near here 3 times a year. We always enjoy it, you just never know what might be there. We do not plan to buy much.........famous last words, I know. The only thing we are really looking for is a couple of doves. We got a really neat big cage this spring and have not gotten anything to put in it. Usually things sell really cheap at the fall sale as folks are thinning out before winter, so it is a good time to buy if there is something we need. We don't have anything to take to sell this time either. We are going to take the last puppy we saved from Sophie's litter and see if we can give her away. We intended to keep her, but just do not need one more dog to feed. She would make someone a good farm dog and we want her to go to a good home! I spent the afternoon redoing the fence in one of the goat pens. I only started out to take out a gate and replace it with a cattle panel. Well, all of it was in need of some fixin up, so ended up changing out the walk in gate and redoing all of the T-posts. I also started to enlarge their pen on the other side, got a couple of panels up, but decided to wait to move the rest of the fence............this old lady was getting tired! We got the last freezer cleaned out this week. Well, it wasn't defrosted like it should have been, so I should say straightened out. It was sad to throw out all that needed thrown out, but it had to be done. Some things weren't marked or dated and some were just old. There is a bunch of misc. meat that I will thaw out and give the dogs along. We are doing a much better job now, always marking and dating before putting anything in the freezer. I am much more aware of the importance of keeping up with that job recently. One of the freezers is empty for the winter and all cleaned out, so we have it turned off now. Hubby stocked up on ground beef yesterday before he went to Farmers Market. Market was very quiet yesterday, it is winding down for the year. I am glad the one I have here is over, I enjoy baking, but the pressure every Friday gets tiring. Yesterday was our Grandson's 15th birthday, Happy Birthday Bodhi. Today was another perfect fall day here, I wish I could order about 2-3 months more of them so I could get everything done outside I want to and need to get done! I am tired and ready to head to bed.............Good night to all. Country Blessings, Marilyn~at Heritage Hill Homestead Thankful Thursday/Using what the Army gave us

{ 10:29 AM, Thursday, October 9, 2008 } { Posted in Thankful Thursday } { 2 comments } { Link } I have to give praise and thanks to the people who came to rescue during our time after Gustav hit us. We received help from several different organizations. The Salvation Army and the Red Cross gave out cleaning and personal items by the buckets full. We decided not to take any of these items. I was looked at as snobish by my sisters in law, but it wasn't that I thought I was too good for these things, it was that we didn't feel we needed it and would have rather had someone else have it that did need it. Also very thankful for the many power company trucks and workers that came in from other states to help restore our power lines. We actually had a crew from Alabama get us back on. Thanks guys! Another group was the Army National Guard, they were a trememdous help to us. They gave out water, tarps, ice, and food, which we did need and took. The food came in the form of MREs, meals ready to eat. These packages are a wonderful assortment of foods. Everything from spaghetti and meatballs to Mexican food, and I have to say, that what I tasted was great. I didn't eat any of these meals due to the high fat and carb content in them, but my boys did. They are made for soldiers who need the protein and carb fill to keep going in the fields, so I understood why they were like that. These packages also contained several others items such as drinks mixes, crackers, a tube of peanut butter or cheese spread, poptarts and/or several types of baked goods (which were delish), candy, and packages of fruit, just to mention a few items. These meals are made to feed a person for the whole day on one meal pack if need be. They even came with these tiny little bottles of Louisiana hot sauce, which I thought was too cute. *If my camera was working I would take a picture of one of these great little meal thingys. I ended up keeping all the odds and ends that were in the meal packs that my boys didn't eat, such as the hot sauce, the crackers, the baked goods, the peanut butter, and the friut. The items have a shelf life of three years, so I stocked them on my shelf in my pantry, lol. So this morning I used some of the friut to make muffins with, and they came out so good too. I made cranberry and blueberry muffins. At first I thought Hummm maybe not, but to my surprise they were very good. My son ate 4 of them, so I know they were good, lol. Well the weather is gorgeous outside, thank you God, so I think we will go do school on the patio. Have a great day everyone.
Where to start-part 5
{ Posted by faithfarm }
There is one thing that I have not mentioned that I probably should have in the begining of this. Both husband and wife need to be in some kind of agreement and have a desire for the homesteading lifestyle. It is not an easy thing to do at first and both partners have to be willing to do what it takes to accomplish this. I'll be honest with you-my heart was not in it completely when we started thinking about it. I wanted a simpler lifestyle but I was not sold on the idea that this was the way. BUT-it was my husbands strong desire and he was patient and kind and truly believed this was right for our family. And before we started I knew it was the right thing to do--it took alot of talking and praying-but I did get there. The concept was always appealing to me I just wasn't sure if I was going to be able to do it. Now I cannot imagine any other way of living. As for the children.....they don't have to like it but it does make it easier. I have found that it is easier with younger children to make this type of lifestyle change than it is for older children. But in the end even the most reluctant teenager found great appreciation for the peace that this life brings. Peace in a crazy world is priceless. Blessings>faithfarm
