Welcome to the book study for Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. We begin today with our first assignment. Before outlining our assignment for this week, let me explain what I'd like for us to do during our study.
First, I have chosen two freedom verses for us to memorize during our study. We will be memorizing the following:
"'Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" - John 8:32 (NIV)
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free..."
- Galations 5:1a (NIV)
Each week that you do your blog post, please include both of our memory verses in your post. This will hopefully help us in memorizing these passages by (a) having to type them out over and over again, and (b) reading the passages on each other's blogs each week.
Second, I would love for each participant to purchase some index cards. The ideal kind would be the ones that have the wire binding. We will call this set of index cards our Truth Cards. As we read this book, I am asking that for every lie that we have believed in the past or present that we write down God's truth for that lie on an index card. For example, if in the past I believed that God did not love me (the lie), then I could write out the following Scripture on an index card:
"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." 1 John 4:10, NIV
Beginning with Chapter Two, at the end of each chapter is a page entitled "Countering Lies With The Truth." These pages list each lie dealt with in that chapter along with what the Truth is according to God's Word. Many Scripture references are given. I recommend using these pages for Scriptures to put on index cards. However, feel free to dive into God's Word and find more Scriptures to include in your set of index cards.
Third, each week I will post questions to go along with the chapter we will read for that week. We will use these questions as part of our discussion on our blogs each week. If there is any question that you feel is too personal to put your answer on your blog, please feel free to not post your answer. However, I do encourage you to still answer the question privately in your own study time.
Fourth, as part of your post on your blog, please write about anything that stood out to you in the chapter as well as anything else you would like to write about in addition to our discussion questions.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me or post a comment on my blog. Now on to this week's assignment.
Assignment 1
Reading
Read the Introduction on pages 15-23.
Questions
1. As you begin this book study, where do you see yourself in relation to living in freedom? Do you feel like you are walking in total freedom? Explain.
2. Write out John 10:10 in your favorite translation. After you've written it out, personalize it.
3. What do you think living abundantly in Christ means? What do you think it looks like?
For Your Blog Post Today
As far as what to post on your own blog today, why not talk about why you want to read this book and what you hope to gain from the study.
For me, one of the reasons I want to read through this book is because I want to be able to recognize lies that I may be believing without realizing it. I want to be armed with the Truth. I also know that by reading this book I am going to be challenged. There very well may be topics discussed that will really challenge my own thinking about those issues. I desparately want to live in Truth. I want to walk in Truth. I am looking forward to doing this as a book study with other women because it will give me the opportunity to discuss these issues with other women.
And here are the memory verses for our study:
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free..."
- Galatians 5:1a (NIV)
"'Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'"
- John 8:32 (NIV)
