I have been reading the book Extraordinary Women: Secrets to Discovering the Dream God Created for You by Julie Clinton with Mary M. Byers. This past week, one of the topics discussed was that of adversity. I want to share the following with you from this book:
"J.I. Packer explains that God has a purpose for our pain:
This is what all the work of grace aims at - an even deeper knowledge of God, and an ever closer fellowship with Him. Grace is God drawing us sinners closer and closer to Him. How does God in grace prosecute this purpose? Not by shielding us from assault by the world, the flesh, and the devil, nor by protecting us from burdensome and frustrating circumstances, nor yet by shielding us from trouble created by our own temperament and psychology; but rather by exposing us to all these things, so as to overwhelm us with a sense of our own inadequacy, and to drive us to cling to Him more closely. This is the ultimate reason, from our standpoint, why God fills our lives with troubles and perplexities of one sort or another - it is to ensure that we shall learn to hold Him fast. " (p. 167)
Would anybody like to share their thoughts on the above quote?
That's a very nice quote, but it's written by two humans!! :-)
Research the word "adversity" in the Bible and you will come up with what GOD says about it. There are hundreds of Scriptures that speak to Growth in Christ through adversity.
James 5:7-13 / 1 Peter 1:3-9/ 1 Peter 4:1-19/ 1 John 2:15-17 and more!
Be careful when reading 'christian material'.....don't put too much stock in the writing or the author. They are both from fallen man. The Holy Bible is The Pure Truth, untainted by sin, and well, Holy!!
Oh that is such a good quote. I've been reading Job and in Job 2:10 he said, "Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" I've also been focusing on 1 Peter 1 for sometime now. I think this quote brings out the scriptures very well. Thanks for sharing it with us.
BTW--stop by the blog for an award.
Blessings in Christ--

To gokings13,
Thanks for your comment on my blog. One of the things I truly believe is that we are to test everything to the Scripture. Scripture tells us to test everything. I have a question for you. Do you disagree with the quote? If so, please show me your Scriptural basis for your disagreement. I am interested in your thoughts on this issue.
Hope you have a wonderful week!

I grew up in a ministry family. The daughter of a preacher, I definitely fit the typical mold of a preacher’s kid. I have had many life experiences including being a pregnant teen and single mom, experiencing divorce, and more. All of my life experiences, good and bad, have molded me into the person I am today. I have an intense desire to see women live in the freedom Christ came to give them. I myself know the prison of bondage and the liberation of Christ.
