Cloth Diapers

One of my charges in our home is the laundry. We use cloth diapers for the youngest 4 children. Therefore I have to wash diapers twice a day, because if I don't they will smell pretty bad.
I actually already posted about how and what I do for the laundry.  I thought I would share how I wash them and what I use.
For laundry detergent we use Seventh Generation. It is an organic product. We usually buy the Free and Clear, but they have scented. We buy powder because it lasts longer than the liquid. I use about 2tablespoons of the detergent for washing.
We also use the Seventh Generation chlorine-free bleach. I use about 1 tablespoon of this. It works on colors too, so it won't fade them. It has really helped the diapers with the smell and dingy-ness.
I also use about 1/4 cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle and some baking soda. That really helps with softness and smell too.
I usually rinse the diapers first, so as to get the urine and everything out of them. Then I put in the detergent with warm water so it will dissolve, then I put the bleach in the bleach drain, and I pour the vinegar into the middle spinner, so it will spin out into the diapers during the rinse cycle.
I usually extra rinse the diapers after the wash so they are extra clean.
During the last rinse, I will usually stick the rubber pants in with them and also a little more vinegar. If we wash the rubber pants in the wash cycle they don't last as long.
We do not put our diapers in the dryer. They don't hold as much if we do. We will occasionally though. We hang our diapers out on the diaper rack. In the summer, I hang them outside in the sun and they dry quickly and the sun kills the bacteria. But during the winter, I hang them inside on the rack.
We made all of our diapers and they have lasted us for 4 years. We actually need to make some more because we have had these for so long and they are starting to look pretty ratty.
Anyway... do you use cloth diapers? How do you care for them? What do you do? I would love to know. Maybe I can pick up a few ideas from you!
Be Blessed!!
As Always,

Cloth Diapers

Posted by maa
My family used to use cloth diapers, but now there are no more babies in the family.
Do you find that the vinegar make them softer? We use cloth wipes, and we do a vinegar rinse. We have found that it makes them so soft.
I found your post very interesting!

Hi Amanda! You were just on my heart, so I thought I would stop in for a visit. I hope that everyone is well. I haven't been blogging as much these days. I've been having some health problems and having tests run. I'm just trusting the Lord and trying to keep on keeping on. Spring will be here before we know it and won't we all be busy then! Loved your post... what a blessing you are to your mother! Could she rent you out? ;-)

my mom used cloth dipers for Paige. In my opinion they are gross. lol They always smelled and leaked and Paige could manage to wrigle her way out of them and would leave them around the house. grrr.

I don't even recall how I stumbled upon your blog, but when it comes to washing anything white (assuming the diapers are white) I always add a squirt of Liquid Bluing... helps to keep the grayishness (yes, I realize that is not a real word LOL) out of the whites so they don't get that dingy look :-)

Diapers

Posted by poppy
My mother had all eight of us children in cloth diapers, I do not know how she could stand it. I have used cloth diapers on a little boy that my friend and I babysat several years ago. That was not the high light of the New Years Eve party. (To make it worse the baby was sick, so we spent the evening cleaning up both ends.)

Although, I think if I ever have children I will use cloth diapers. My older sister, Keri, uses disposable diapers and it costs about $25 for a box of 40!

Well I did not mean to ramble.

Sincerely,

~Mary-Ann~
