A Vagabond Song
So sorry about not getting over here. If you want to know why, come read about Where In The World Is SuperAngel?? and you can find out.
I was going back through one of my old copywork books and found one where I have copied poetry out of one of my spelling books. In it I found this poem. I think it is a very fitting one as it is October and can relate to the time now. Especially in the country. The trees here have finally started to change colors and it is very cold today. We were in the 90's earlier this week and now today's high is 50!!
So enjoy this autumn poem and think of how fast this season will be gone.
A Vagabond Song
by Bliss Carman
There is something in the autumn that is native to my blood;
Touch of manner, hint of mood;
And my heart is like a rhyme,
With the yellow and the purple and the crimson keeping time.
The scarlet of the maples can shake me like a cry.
Of bugles going by.
And my lonely spirit thrills
To see the frosty asters like a smoke upon the hills.
There is something in October sets the Gypsy blood astir,
We must rise and follow her,
When from every hill of flame
She calls and calls each vagabond by name.
A little about the poet:
Bliss Carman 1861-1929
Bliss Carman was one of Canada's most productive poets. His poetry, which centers on the themes of the beauty & power of nature & the carefree life of the wanderer, is known for its haunting musical effect. His most popular books were the Vagabondia series which he wrote with American Poet Richard Hovey. In 1888, he moved to New York City, where he lived for most of his life, writing and working as an editor for various periodicals. In 1925, the Royal Society of Canada awarded him the Lorne Pierce Medal for distunguish service to literature, and in 1928, the Canadian Parliment awarded him its poet laureate medal. The Poetry Society of America awarded him a medal posthumously.
