A couple weeks ago, we switched the Girls feed from pelleted to whole grains. I was feeding them Nutrena SafeChoice, beet pulp, and DuMor Sweet Feed 14%. Since we are mixing our own feed for Jocelyn's goats, I decided we could just make the horses feed wholegrains. So here is my mixure:
50# Mixure:
Wheat 5# 2.22 protein
Barley 20# 4.0 protein
Oats 10# 1.88 protein
Beet Pulp 15# .18 protein
So they are getting 8.28% protein in each feeding. Plus I add some salt into it.
I feed them in the morning and evening. So that is 16.56% protein each day. Plus we were lucky to find some timothy grass hay for them too. I think they like this feed much better as it fills them more.
If you have horses or had horses, what do/did you feed them?? I made my mix off what is listed in Storey's Guide to Raising Horses. Altho it doesn't have a mix or how much they should have, we figured out this would work for them. As Always,
I don't have any horses but I sure wish that I do!
www.homeschoolblogger.com/plainjane has horses. You could ask them what they feed them. I like oreos to!

We have about 5 acres of timothy/clover/alfalfa pasture that we have the horse and pony on. So I don't feed them anything extra in the spring/summer/early fall other then a mineral block. In the winter they just get grass hay, mineral block, and if we have a real cold snap I'll give them some kernal corn to give them alittle extra engergy. I don't like to give them extra stuff cause it winds them up too much and they're hard to work with. =p

I feed our horses alfa/berm hay a flake of each. When they get sweet feed it is a mixture of wheat, corn, barley, rice bran, beet plup, senior feed ,slat, sand colic treatment. Our one mare was feed triple crown senior feed , rice bran , rice bran oil alfa/bermuda hay, she did real good on it but it cost us over a $100.00 a week to feed just for her. We will be adding a homemade mixture for the 3 horses we have left as soon as it starts to cool down more here, we are still in the 80's-90's. We are down to 3 horses at this time as we lost 2 horses this summer one 28+ yr old mare to colic, my 15 yr old daughter best friend for 10 yrs, and the 33 yr old mare I told you about above. Good to see you are interested in feeding your horses the right food that is for them and that you have researched it. God Bless. mj
We have been looking for a better way to feed our lonely mare here. She is very green yet and we are learning right along with her most days. She surprised us with a fiesty colt this past May -- who she promptly rejected and we have been raising him ourselves. He thinks he's about as human as one can get at this point!
We avoid sweet feeds with the mare...she is too rambunctious to be kicked into a sugar rush already.
