What a NIGHTMARE!!
Oh my... what a day... A very SCARY thing happened today. Actually it was a nitemare I had had. The Girls got out of the pasture. They got out of the fence into an unfenced area.
So here is the story... Mom was sitting in the living room on the phone and looking out the window. All the sudden, she says “THE HORSES ARE OUT!!” I freaked and ran to the door. When I saw them, I was... I don’t even know what I was... All I knew was that I HAD to get out there and get them.
The girls were in the garden walking around like they owned the world. By the time I got outside, they were galloping off into the horizon. I ran down to the barn to get a lead and mom was watching them to see where they went. When I got back up there, they had gone about an acre or MORE away from our property. We had NO CLUE what to do to get them back. I ran out toward them when they started running to the road. I was calling them and praying and calling and praying. I was in shocked. So they were on their way to the road, when they stopped half way there, and started grazing. So I called and started toward them. I kept calling them, and they started coming toward me. They came back toward the property, and got to our line, all the while me calling them. When they were about 50feet from me, I was still calling them, they started coming towards me, but then decided they didn’t want to listen and started toward the back field again. They stopped at our property line, and stood there, while I inched my way to them, calling them. I finally got close enough to them, and was able to get Estrella’s halter, then grabbed Dulcy’s. I called Jocelyn who was by the house, and told her to grab Dulcy.
FYI... it is VERY hard to hold a horse when you are quaking with fear and shaking really bad.
So now the trick was to get them back to the barn on the other side of the property. I didn’t have the leads, cause Mom had taken them when she had gotten in the van. She had gotten in the van, when they started for the road. She thought the only thing she could do if they ran that way was to follow them. So I am leading Estrella by a halter and Joc is leading Dulcy. I finally get a lead and hook Estrella up, and then we are able to get them in their stalls.
That was the scariest thing that I think has ever happened to me. I am breathing hard as I type this because it is still so vivid in my mind. It was horrible, I am surprised I didn’t pass out or have a heart attack. Thank God I didn’t, but oh goodness, it was HORRIBLE.
It was all by God’s almighty hand that we even saw them. See the gate is on the other side of the barn, in the back. SO had they not come up toward the house, and ran out back, we would have NEVER seen them again. So God was watching them and brought them to us, so we could catch them. Although in my mind, there was NO WAY we were going to catch them. I am so thankful to God for watching out for me. Who knows what would have happened if we had not caught them.
Ok... so we figured out that they got out because on the back of the barn is a “lean-to” and we had torn it down to rebuild it for the bucks, but had not been able to get out there. So there was no wall on the back of the barn, and there was a gap between the fence and barn. So I hooked the gate REALLY well, and then put up some boards in the open area. It was pretty secure, and I wasn’t too worried about them getting out, because they had been out the day before with the same conditions. So what happened was the wind blew boards on the fence and knocked it down and that is how they got out.
So I have had a trying day and got PLENTY of exercise. When I told Paulie on the phone today what happened, he said that the reason they didn’t come to me was because they didn’t want to be sent to the glue factory. LOL!! It was not funny at the time, but it was sorta afterwards. Thanks for a laugh, Paulie !!
So after this escapade, Mom and I went to town to get something to drink and on our way home Mom was like, “oh I can just see the horses running down the road here.” It was kinda funny. Not really.
Ok... so although I am overjoyed to know that they know I am lead mare and am the “boss” I am still getting rid of them. I will be sad to see them go, but it has to be. Especially if we plan to move... I won’t be moving with them anyway. That would be too hard on me and them.
Ok... I think I am ready for bed!! Anyone in Indiana want a filly that needs to be trained?? I didn’t think so... but just thought I would ask!!
Love...
