Tapping the trees, but not the maples....

{ 10:15, 2007-Mar-9 } { Posted in Daily Musings } { 3 comments } { Link }

We just planted sugar maples last year, so we have a while before we get to that point...lol...we are setting taps and buckets out on Birch trees so I can make homemade Birch Rootbeer.  It is my first time through the whole process, and the soda takes 3 months to finsh, so I won't even know how it went until the beginning of summer!!  Exercise in patience.  Washed all the buckets, lids and taps tonight ~ and we'll be hanging them this weekend.  This morning it was -29, so we have a few days before the sap will run.

Tomorrow we are going to a flower and garden show in Portland ME.  It should be a fun day of new ideas and lots of fun stuff to think about.  Every time I go to one of those, I find new ideas.

I am working on a pair of crocheted socks ~ should finish them by tomorrow evening or early on Sunday ~ they are looking pretty nice ~ kinda "rag wool" looking for clogs.  They are pretty easy.

I am also reading an interesting book called "Aunt Sarah ~ Woman of the Dawnland", a book about an Abenaki Medicine woman living here in Northern NH/VT ~ it is so interesting to hear about the wild plants she used, where she gathered them, and how they were used.  And all in my backyard practically.  I have Mic'Maq in my bloodline, so stories like these are very interesting to me, and they harbal angle appeals to me too ~ I am very interested in learning about the way God has planned for our health, by providing healthy foods and healing herbs/plants.

Well, I'm off to bed, I'll write and let you know how the flower/garden show went.

Val

There is a great book called "What the Bible says about Healthy Living" By Dr. Rex Russell.
There is a whole chapter about herbs and spices!

Hey Val!

I don't drink soda anymore unless I can find "REAL" BirchBeer. It's my absolute favorite, but is so hard to find. The last time I had it was about 3 years ago when I was at a Civil War re-enactment and they were selling it.You are very fortunate to have enough trees to tap and make your own.

The Aunt Sarah book sounds interesting. I enjoy reading about things like that too. I remember reading a book to the children about the Abenaki and the raid on Deerfield MA. Very interesting.

Have fun at the Flower & Garden show. Come back with lots of ideas to share. I need (want) to do some new things in the garden this year, but I don't know what yet. :-) Give me some inspiration. LOL!

As always, good to hear from you and what's going on around your home. I hope you're getting that garden journal written in. ;-)

~~Anne
