It has been ages since I've updated....Well the end of the harvest is upon me, and as I have been finishing things up for the season, I realized how much I have neglected my blog ~ I don't know how those of you with more than one ever keep up!
So, the lowdown on this year's bounty ~ after the initial drowning of the garden and the second planting (3 times for corn) and subsequent drowning again (we are moving the garden to higher ground for next year) ~ the results are mixed, but on the poor side to say the least:
Blue potatoes ~ none ~ never recovered from the moose stomping on them early spring Kennebec's ~ planted 2.5 lbs seed potatoes ~ harvested 50 lbs ~ not too shabby Carrots ~ froze 7 pounds, ate 2-3 fresh tomatoes ~ tough start, but in the end the roma's started delivering ~ but still slim ~ only about 10 lbs Onions ~ planted 180, harvested about that amount ~ will be freezing a good amount of 'em Lettuce ~ fared extremely well, we've been "in lettuce" all summer Peas ~ did terrible ~ can you even imagine??!!! I couldn't Turnips and beets ~ not great at all, but enough for a dinner or two's veggies Pickling cukes ~ considering these were a present for someone else that we needed to plant after a missed trip ~ we got 4 quarts of pickles out of 'em. Broccoli and Brussel Sprouts ~ a complete wash :-( Green Beans ~ small crop, but tasty and yummy Cabbage ~ puled 8 out of 12 heads planted ~ not too shabby Rutabagas ~ smaller than anticipated, bt pulled all but 6 of 'em at 3 inches or better Pumpkins ~ baby pams gave us 6, jacks none, complet wash considering last year we had over 20 jacks alone Squash ~ none, absolutely none Regular Cukes ~ about 10 lbs Zucchini ~ about 10 lbs Corn ~ NONE!!!! (UGH)
Well, as you can tell this was frustrating. We had an extremely wet spring, followed by an extremely wet beginning to the summer, so things really just didn't take off like they should have...well we've tilled up the new area for the new (and bigger) garden area. We have sent the soil to the Cooperative Extension for testing ~ we have bought photo degradeable mulch ~ and we are good to go for next year, sigh, there's always next year...
One the positive side of things ~ the blueberry bushes produced, and we just planted them this year ~ not a great crop ~ but we picked tons enough to make up for it. I made lots of jam ~ and pie filling for 1 pie, and 16 blueberry pie "turnovers" (hand held pies). I also have frozen some 16 cups for winter baking.
Finishing up with apples presently ~ about a bushel ~ made apple crisp (which disappeared in 2 days!), made apple pie filling (making turnovers tonight or tomorrow night), the apple bars from AnnRe's blog (They are yummy!). Tonight I am making applesauce and Friday apple jelly ~ then I should be done with the apples.
Blueberry liqueur should be ready in time for Christmas giving.
The valient grapes produced ~ not enough for anything but eating (first year crop) but boy are they nice and tart!
But the herb garde...well...I'll write that one separately... val
