Perennial and Veggie Garden Updates

Hi, I'll get to the picture taking once things get "grown in" a bit more...

Perennial Flower garden

This weekend we added some kind of Mallow to the mix this weekend and a Hens and Chickens ~ our new iceland poppies have bloomed, the hostas are doing well ~ it’s weird, the two ends of the garden are doing well, but the middle is a bit sparse.  The foxgloves are up and blooming, the jocaob’s ladder and lamb’s ears are really pretty ~ the annual border ~ dahlia’s and marigold’s pansies, salvia and viola’s are all finally blooming nice (though the dahlia’s are laggin a bit).

The Veggie Garden

All this rain we’ve been getting is just about drowning everything!  UGH!  Actually it’s not that bad, but the tomoatoes…grrrr…they are not so hot.

The peas are flowering, so if the rain lets up enoough for the bes, we should have peas on the 4th (which is usual time).  We planted some pickling cukes and celeriac this weekend ~ also we set in the cantelope transplants.  We need to re-seed some of the corn ~ Weds or Thurs after the rain lets up.  So the progress thus far:

Kennebec potatoes ~ Awesome ~ plants are 3 feet tall and being buried in (have buried twice already), need to bury them in again as soon as the rain lets up.

All-Blue potatoes ~ pretty good, the ones that the moose didn’t step on are just about ready to bury in for the first time.

Onions ~ all 180 of them ~ they are doing incredible!

Radishes ~ stinky just like last year ~ going to try to plant them in another

Carrots ~ looking good so far ~ tops are 3-4”

Lettuce ~ 1st  7 heads planted are looking nice, slower growing iceburg type, but looking good, first year try out, so we’ll see.

Turnip ~ looks OK ~ tops are about 3-4”

Beets ~ again, looks good about 3-4” tops

Cabbage ~ awesome ~ all leafed out and first heads are forming

Peas ~ they are flowering, but are a little shorter than last year ~ maybe they’ll shoot up a bit more

Tomatoes ~ yuck ~ too much water, the cherries and the orginal romas we planted aren’t looking so hot though they are budding off ~ the 4 new romas are looking great.

Bell peppers ~ plants are nice and green but haven’t started their “real” growth spurt, but last year that didn’t happen ‘til mid-July ~ so they are OK

Banana peppers ~ looking great, nice and green

Pickling Cukes ~ just transplanted, but they are 1 foot tall and look good

Celeriac ~ just bought and transplanted

Zucchini ~ does it ever do badly?

Broccoli ~ it’s a little slow ~ only about 4-6” ~ too much water, old growth is a bit purple-ish, but new growth is nice green ~ should be fine

Brussell Sprouts ~ looking pretty good 6-8 inches ~ was real slow last year, so I hope this works out a little better

Green Beans ~ plants are about 8” tall ~ looks like we’ll have a decent yield if they all flower up OK

Rutabaga ~ a slow grower anyway, but tops are about 3 inches ~ pretty good

Regular Cukes ~ not so great, too much water

Jack o’lanterns ~ awesome, vines are about 1 foot long

Baby Pam Pumkins ~ same as above

Waltham Butternut Squash ~ a little behind the pumpkins, vines vary from 4-8 inches ~ buit they lagged behind last year too and we had a great yield, so my fingers are crossed

Asparagus ~ has gone by, looks like 5 of the orinal 10 plants survived ~ should be able to harvest something from them next year

Rhubarb ~ newly planted ~ showed great stalks and leaves on both plants, but alas cannot harvest until next year.
