The Simple Pleasures of Life

• Fri 30 Dec 2005 - Something New to do ~ Felting

Posted in Handicrafts

I have found something new to do.  Yes, it may not be new to some of you, but it is for me.  It is felting.  Okay, for those who don't know what this, I'll explain.

Felting is the process of taking loose wool fibers and rubbing them until they mat together into a permanent fabric.   The transformation from loose fibers to felt results because each wool fiber is covered with tiny scaales that relax, opening away fromthe fiber when warm and then pull tightly together when cooled.  Even though felted fabric is actually called "fulled" the effect is new and fuzzy look.  The process has the potential to create new textures in crochet.  You can either felt by hand or washing machine depending on the size of the project.  Taken from Jane Davis' book "Felted Crochet."  I'm using this book from the library.

You can purchase a copy at Amazon.

Once I purchase my yarn, which has to be yarn that is not labeld "machine washable," I will select one of the easier projects to start.  Maybe the small project bag p.30 or the toy ball p.108.  I'll post my progress once I get started along w/a picture of the selected project from the book.

Have any of you done this yet?  If so, I would appreciate any suggests or tips you might have and to see pics of your work.

Talk w/you all later.

Well, felting is pretty easy, so to speak. You get your wool ... the finer the better ... then soap and hot water and rub and rub and rub.

My daughter, Joy, knit a purse, then threw the whole thing in the washing machine with hot HOT soapy water and it shrink and made a lovely felted purse. There are patterns for knitting huge slippers and felting them in the washing machine.

You can also just use the raw wool and draw a foot pattern (or hand, if you want mittens) and do the rubbing and rubbing with hot water and make felted slippers (or mittens).

Anything is possible. However, I cannot speak from personal experience, because felting is a cursed word for me!! I work so HARD to keep my wool from felting when I wash it to spin it. I, personally, feel that felting is harming the wool and I cannot do it. But that doesn't keep me from admiring (and using) felted articles!!

Good luck

My dmil tried to teach me to crochet many years ago. I gave up trying then, but now that I'm aspiring to be a "homesteader", I need to pick up the needle and yarn again! You're inspiring me! :)
