The Simple Pleasures of Life

• Mon 23 Jan 2006 - Dining on a Dime ~ Pt 1

Posted in Homestyle

Dining on a Dime is a cookbook by Tawra William and Jill Cooper, I found while searching Amazon for related links to "Frugal Luxuries."  I will share some tips from Basics of Frugal Cooking.

1. Remember the ideas in this book are only suggestions ~ yes, good point to be considered on any book and anyone's opinion ~ including me. LOL

2. Try not to take the book too seriously! ~ wonder what that means, guess we'll know later.

3. Don't become overwhelmed ~ yeah right, this book is over 400 pgs long and I'm only on pg 8.

4. Cooking frugally is a mind set ~ now thats information I can use and believe.

5. Don't get discouraged ~ who does this?! Well, maybe a little, so then what. Oh, never give up ~ isn't that a Churchill saying or something.

6. Cooking frugally is like changing your diet ~ I'm beginning to get concerned.  Who said anything about "diet" isn't that a taboo word?

7. Try cutting just $25.00 or $50.00 a month ~ wow, baby steps.  Yes, I can do this one.

8. Make cooking frugally a challenge ~ not sure I wanna play, how about you?!

9. Drink water with your meals ~ sounds simple enough, unless you live in OK or TX where your water doesn't taste so good. Ugh!

10. Use dry milk for baking ~ I've been doing this for over 5 yrs and it is a true $ saver.

Okay, so I didn't list everything because then I would have had to list her little notes instead of mine.   Some of these are useful and some I've done already, but it was nice to see them in print.

So, in order to live a frugal life in the kitchen, we must change our way of thinking.  Now that sounds familiar, ummm, wonder where I've heard that before.  I'll be right back.......................................................

Got it, now what do you think of that:

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Romans 12:2

Have a great week, dear friends.  I hope this has given you something to think about and to laugh about ~ you know "A merry heart doth good like a medicine."  Talk w/you all again soon.

Sounds like a really good book. (And I agree about the water in OK. Thankfully we are on a water well and it doesn't taste so bad.) Have you ever visited the website www.Hillbilly Housewife.com? She has some great menus/shopping lists for frugal cooking.

You know what's good, powdered milk with cream soda. I never thought about using it in baking, good idea, thanks!
