Tractor Woes!

in Farm and Garden - Post Comment

OK, I admit it,  I may be a farm girl,  born and bred , but my Dad never taught me to work with a tractor, and I have a lot to learn when it comes to those deisel monstrosities!  To me, they greatly resemble some huge beast,  huffing and pufing,  belching smoke and fury.

My hubby, on the other hand, is in his element, when riding atop the bouncing seat, his old straw hat's brim, flapping and waving in the breeze.  Me, I look like a weird conglomeration of city meets country!  You know, I thought I was an intrepid soul, ready to face country life again, plow straight rows, and drive those things through the fields, with nary a hair out of place!  Let me tell you, I was WRONG!

Not only have I found that  tractor cruising is likey to make my recent visit to the beauty salon of absolutely no value, I have also learned that jeans that have a fancy label are definately not the same as the good old Levi's I grew up with.  I mean, one little mud bath, and they are useless!   Gracious, if you can't wear them to feed the hogs, what good are they? LOL

Two major points about tractors...they stink, and they do not stop on a dime, as I have recently found out, much to dear hubby's chargin.  Have you ever tried to stop a two ton John Deere less than ten yards from a light pole?  Let me tell you, it does not work!  We now have a listing creosote soaked pole in our side yard to prove this point, if you would like to see it!

And as for the smell, well it seems to waft over me, and make it's home in my clothes, hair and skin.  How do you know that you need a shower, after you have been on the tractor?  When your youngest comes up to you, offers a hug, and holds her nose, at the same time!

All in all, I like our old tractor, anyway.  When I am riding in the torn seat, high above mere mortals, I feel like a real country gal again.  The only drawback is that I also forget what I am doing, as I enjoy the experience.  As a result, darling hubby is tying brightly colored ribbons to poles and trees all over the yard!  Lesson learned:  Pay attention!  Just because I feel invincible, does not mean the tractor feels the same way!

Hi there, I got a giggle out of your post. We just bought a Kubota tractor last summer for mowing and blading our road and whatever else it's needed for. I absolutely fell in love with the thing and would be out there on it mowing for hours at a time. My poor son kept asking to be taught how to run it, but no no I was just fine on it myself. lol That is, of course, where my screen name came from. I even got to teach my husband how to run it since it was delivered the day before he left for Iraq. Although he used to run heavy equipment so it only took a few minutes for him to be much better at it than me. LOL I've enjoyed your posts and can't wait to hear more!

PS I added you to my friends list :)

I love to ride and play on the tractor! I was not brought up a country girls either, far from it. A woman can learn to drive the tractor and enjoy it as much as hubbies. God Bless. mj
