The Time for Home
Posted in Farm Happenings
Winter is the time for comfort - it is the time for home.
-Edith Sitwell
I dearly love that quote. So simple, yet so true! I do love this time of the year, it chases us all in and keeps us focused on what's going on within these walls. It truly IS the time for home. I find great comfort in fuzzy socks and wool sweaters or a quilt, a boy and a cat all curled up next to me as I read. Spring and summer have their benefits as well, of course, and I enjoy their sweetness when they arrive. There is nothing like the feeling of hard work outdoors and the smell of the plowed fields and I try to drink in every drop-- but to everything there is a season and for now we stay warm and cozy in a time of rest. There is much comfort in routine and togetherness.
All is quiet this evening. We had a pretty quiet day as well. We decided to go ahead and take down the trees (except for the small twig tree that stays up all year) and garlands. I was forever sweeping up the needles! Oh, I'm not going to complain. It was worth it to have the fresh pine smell through the Christmas season, and I will do it all again next year. Normally, I wait until after New Year's Day to take things down, but we will be back into our school schedule on Wednesday and I wanted a tidy house.
My husband spent most of his day in the barn working on the tractor. He had to take quite a journey (nearly to another State) to get the parts! Our small town, family owned dealer has just closed its doors. That would have been such a heartbreak for my grandpa, who relied on them for all of his farm equipment needs. I think he went sometimes just to socialize.
Well, my youngest is waiting on me. We're going to play checkers while we watch Sarah, Plain and Tall: Winter's End. For us, winter is just beginning, but it's not so bad. :-)

I was just looking through my quote book today and saw that quote...it's one of my favorites too!
I am taking down our tree tomorrow and the rest of the things on the 1st. I like to start to New Year off with things clean and tidy as well.
I wanted to let you know that I made your Christmas jam this month and absolutely loved it! I doubled the batch so I had plenty to give away and am going to make some more this January. Thank you for sharing the recipe!
Happy New Year!
Hugs,
Kelli

Thanks for this reminder of enjoying this time of relative rest - yes, come May 1, things really get busy with the garden, flowers, and animals.
There is a family-owned auto garage just down the road from us - the dad is an old timer who just mostly sits in his chair with his dog by his side in front of the garage (while his sons fix cars) and waves to all who pass and talks a blue streak to anyone who stops in - something ya hope will never change, but sadly know that it someday will.
We will be taking down our Christmas decor on January 1st. The girls joyfully anticipate putting everything up, but it's like pulling teeth to take it down again - so tears are shed having to say good-bye to the Season until next year.
Blessings on Your New Year!!

I really appreciate your kind words. :O)
And I can relate to the loss of the parts store too. Our little convenience/general store down the road is closing this weekend and we are totally mourning the loss.
It was so nice to be able to run down there for gas, to pick up drinks or a gallon of milk and be able to chat with our neighbors there. sad, sad, sad...

I truly enjoy your blog. Winter ,with its short days, allows me to spend more of my time on those things that require quiet time for introspection, more time for the works of my hands, more time for reading. Winter is a blessing. Thank you for your thoughts, jodalton
