~Simple Gifts~

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight
'Till by turning, turning we come round right.

Shaker dance song by Joseph Brackett, 1848

My Monday, My Projects...

Posted in Farm Happenings

We're still under the weather.This virus is a nasty thing! We rested over the weekend (well, as much as possible) and didn't even make it to church. As much as I dread flu season, the common cold does more damage for my asthmatic children. So far, we have been able to manage at home, so that's a blessing.

Our out of town guests arrive late tomorrow and I am in the middle of a bathroom remodeling project! Can you imagine? What was I thinking? It started innocently enough by tearing off old wallpaper in preparation for a small painting job. From there you see, it snowballed. Nevermind that I still have fabric on my dining room table for the curtains in that room and pillows to make for my sofa. But... never fear! If you know me well, you know that I work best under pressure.

The curtain fabric is a reproduction print from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. It's also BLUE and cream which is a huge change for this red loving gal. They will have a very simple design, so they won't take long to sew up. The settee is done and looks fabulous! I had intended to take pictures through the whole process, but we were too nervous to even think of it. I'll share the finished product soon.

I am so thankful to the Lord for the strength and energy that I've had lately. A few weeks ago, I was in so much pain that I could barely even use my hands or walk. Waking each day to discomfort and not being able to do the things I needed to do was very disheartening. Anyone who lives with an "invisible" but chronic disease certainly understands those feelings. Though I am not one to use medication, I was desperate enough to try one and it really did help. I feel much like a new woman! I'll have my test results soon.

The weather certainly is beautiful! Summer has returned with warm sunshine and temperatures expected all week. It's bringing in some rain as well, and I hope that Saturday will remain dry for our harvest party. We have a lot of decorating left to do outside, but with the wonderful weather, it will be a pleasure to do it! This morning, the sun caught our maple tree just right and it set it ablaze with color. What a glorious time of year! If only it lasted longer...

I hope you all feel better soon.
We had a bad cold that turned into bronchitis in Aug and it was miserable. I know how it can be to have physical limitations - very frustrating at times. (I have to really be careful with my back) I have to pace myself and some larger jobs just aren't possible for me)
Glad you found something that is helping.

Dear amy ~

I love the photo...... the decor looks very primitive! :)
I am sorry to hear your family is under the weather...... it is that time of year.... flu season.... uggh! Keep taking VIT C -- this stuff really does work ... and take it all winter and fall long.... to keep your immune system up ......... I also did not realize that your illness was so progressed.....oh, amy! I am so sorry! I wish they could find out what it is -- your sure it's not lymes? They call it the "great imitator" meaning it masks itself as many auto immune disorders from arthritis, to MS to fibromalgia (sp?)
In any case I sure hope it's not lymes! You take good care and don't over do it too much dear!
I look forward to seeing pics of the settee....... and of course the remodeled bath. :)
Blessings,
gloria

Sorry to hear that you all are feeling under the weather. I do hope you are feeling better today. Glad to hear the medication is helping. Our little Ladybug has had a nasty cold too and my Asthma is really acting up - but saw the doc. yesterday and I'm already feeling better.

The photo is beautiful!!! and can't wait to see the settee & curtains - I know what those snowball jobs are like. I will have to look up the Colonial Willamsburg Foundation
Blessings on your day!!!

Hi, I'm new to your blog. I love it.
My guess is that you have fibromyalgia-that's what it sounds like to me. If so, there are natural cures. I've been recovering for the past 6 years from a close cousin-chronic fatigue syndrome.
Anyway, your blog is a new favorite. I love the simplicity and the pictures. When my energy is up more, I'd love to have a life similar to yours, but on a lesser scale. :)
Thank you for sharing your blog with us.

My Mom has a chronic "invisible" disease also. She has neuropathy in her feet and lives in excruciating pain. My husband is a naturopath and he always feels that you should do whatever natural you can, but God did help create some traditional medicines to help you.
Blessings,
Farrah

I'm sorry that you're sick, I hope that you get feeling better SOON!!!! I just had a quick question to ask you... my blog has been taking FOREVER to load, even on my fairly fast computer. I was wondering if it is because I have lots of pictures, but your blog is always fast to load and you have lots of GREAT ones!! Also... where do you keep your pictures? Because on mine if you get on my photo album... you see all of my "lovely" pictures of my blog template things... don't answer if you aren't feeling up to it... just wondering if you knew what the problem was!!! Get feeling better SOON... you're in my prayers!

Blessings,
Alex

Blessings Dear Amy!
I am sorry to hear of your families health. It's difficult especially when we are just in the beginnings of winterizing. I am just recovering from pneumonia myself...long story...but suffice to say I have been delivered from yet another valley:)
I pray they find soon what ails you. I got worse and worse for 5 years before they finally found my problem. PPS. Funny, I always thought that once you recover from something it doesn't come back to haunt you later:P Silly me! It was Gods way of slowing me down and making me listen. He's got a way of doing that:)
I am just dying to see your finished sofa! I'm so glad it turned out the way you wanted. I am about to do the same with an lovely antique I picked up at auction for a song (literally:P I'll explain that some day:D) and a gliding rocker that my sweet husband bought at the auction a couple weeks ago for a pitance:) I must admit I'm a little worried about the rocker as the underseat is also upholstered so that will be a challenge for sure:)
I look forward to seeing your pictures.
We are lifting your family in prayer for healing, a wonderful visit with your company and a joyful time with your harvest party.
God be with thee!
Sister Lori

I'm sorry you've been feeling so awful. I hope your tests results give the doctors some idea on how to help you make you pain free.

I can't wait to see pictures of these projects you are working on!!

Warm Winter Wishes

"SimpleFolk" comes from my love of simpler times and old ways. I have such a great respect for my ancestors.They were hard working, clean living "plain folk" who loved the Lord and left quite a legacy. I delight in clothes on the line, blue Mason jars, and an egg basket full of beautiful brown eggs. This is my journal for our daily life here on our farm.

In The Farm Kitchen

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Farm Kitchen
~~~~~~~~~~~
I like my kitchen. The big shining stove with its friendly wood fire; copper kettle singing its contralto song; plump black pot with its bubbling savory stew.
The rich, golden smell of cornbread ready to take from the oven, blending with the piquant spiciness of hot gingerbread. I like the wide painted floorboards and the red geraniums in the windows; the little brown pots with trailing ivy.
The view of the road where I can watch the R.F.D. man drive up to the mailbox.
I like to see the table set for supper, the red cloth, blue napkins and cream colored dishes. The cat lies curled on the rocking chair cushion. Shep lies beside the stove watching every move.
Soon I'll hear his footsteps coming through the woodshed and the soft clink of milk pails. Storms may lash outside; here in my kitchen--all is warm and safe.
A FARMER'S NOTEBOOK ~~~~~~~~~~
SPRING: half-cold, half-warm the April wind tugs at the chestnut's mane; he sets his hooves deep in the earth and furrows are left behind. Swallows call wildly to their wheeling loves.
SUMMER: the tall corn talks in the amber day; the tiger lilies bloom in the river marsh. The hay is in, the timothy meadows sway beneath the crow's black crying, slow and harsh.
AUTUMN: the heifers come down from the golden hill; the dooryard rose-hips have the hardness of coral; supper smoke rises straight and the nights are a chill; beneath the red maple leaves the ground lies sorrel.
WINTER: before green dawn the lantern light in the breathing barn casts a circle of the color of honey; hills climb through stars, my acres are drifted white; and my heart knows the taste of a good year strong and sunny.
