~Simple Gifts~

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight
'Till by turning, turning we come round right.

Shaker dance song by Joseph Brackett, 1848

Show & Tell Friday

Posted in Show & Tell Friday

This is one of my favorite treasures. This is the ledger that my great-grandfather purchased in 1917, the year he married my great-grandmother. He wrote in the monthly expenses as they set up housekeeping, and continued through 1924. It's an amazing document for our family, mentioning several of our relatives. As the years went on, you could see how they had prospered and added to their farm. There is mention of animals (seven head of sheep for $100.00, and a gray mare for $161.00) but I'll just share what was written in 1917-18.

It's fascinating to me, what housewares cost in that time.

 How about some of these prices:

12# flour  .78

10# rice  .99

10# sugar  .79

1 1/2 # corn meal  .09

30# rolled oats  1.58

soap  .10

milk bucket  .75

candy  .15

bread  .10

bananas  .16

2 Pair overalls  3.20

83 gal. Kerosene  .42

hair pins  .10

toothpaste  .10

ice cream  .05

onion sets  .33

pencils  .10

rubber boots  3.25

5 postal cards and stamps  .25

Then there were some interesting things listed such as :

For use of horse and buggy   1.00

Telegram for O.E. Kinzie   .65

Ed Toothman helping butcher  1.00

Shoes repaired  .15

Rubber tires on buggy  14.00

Beans from Bessie (must have been a freebie)

Mrs. Sherard for duck eggs  1.00

Fixing Anna's teeth (my great-grandmother)  2.00

Pictures of baby (I have one of these pictures)  5.00

Note the top where is says, " Chair Rocker-- 9.00" ...

...well, here it is. Pretty neat, huh?

Gram had it in her basement and I was so fortunate that she told me what it was.

Here's the most important part of this ledger to me.

At the very bottom of this page it reads:

 "November 9--- Paid to Dr.  Randall 18.50."

That was the day my grandma was born!

What wonderful family connections. Your children are so blessed to be so connecred.

What a great Math assignment that would be for your children to compare the ledger with thesame things today.

Oh, that is such a wonderful treasure! I remember reading how Victorian ladies would keep track of all their expenses and I wished I could see one of their ledger books so I want to thank you for sharing your Great Grandfather's with us! The rocking chair is beautiful and I love how you have that cozy little corner of your home set up. How neat about the bottom entry too...prices certainly have gone
up! :0)

"SimpleFolk" comes from my love of simpler times and old ways. I have such a great respect for my ancestors. They were hard working, clean living "plain folks" who loved the Lord and left quite a legacy. I delight in clothes on the line, blue Mason jars, old wire baskets full of beautiful brown eggs, and anything with chipping paint. This is my journal for our daily life here on our farm. Thank you for visiting with me.

In The Farm Kitchen

Farm Kitchen
~~~~~~~~~~~
I like my kitchen. The big shining stove with its friendly wood fire; copper kettle singing its contralto song; plump black pot with its bubbling savory stew.
The rich, golden smell of cornbread ready to take from the oven, blending with the piquant spiciness of hot gingerbread. I like the wide painted floorboards and the red geraniums in the windows; the little brown pots with trailing ivy.
The view of the road where I can watch the R.F.D. man drive up to the mailbox.
I like to see the table set for supper, the red cloth, blue napkins and cream colored dishes. The cat lies curled on the rocking chair cushion. Shep lies beside the stove watching every move.
Soon I'll hear his footsteps coming through the woodshed and the soft clink of milk pails. Storms may lash outside; here in my kitchen--all is warm and safe.
A FARMER'S NOTEBOOK ~~~~~~~~~~
SPRING: half-cold, half-warm the April wind tugs at the chestnut's mane; he sets his hooves deep in the earth and furrows are left behind. Swallows call wildly to their wheeling loves.
SUMMER: the tall corn talks in the amber day; the tiger lilies bloom in the river marsh. The hay is in, the timothy meadows sway beneath the crow's black crying, slow and harsh.
AUTUMN: the heifers come down from the golden hill; the dooryard rose-hips have the hardness of coral; supper smoke rises straight and the nights are a chill; beneath the red maple leaves the ground lies sorrel.
WINTER: before green dawn the lantern light in the breathing barn casts a circle of the color of honey; hills climb through stars, my acres are drifted white; and my heart knows the taste of a good year strong and sunny.
