~Simple Gifts~

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight
'Till by turning, turning we come round right.

Shaker dance song by Joseph Brackett, 1848

Snow Day (A Day in My Life January)

I woke up early this morning with the intentions of going to the grocery, but light snow started to fall and I soon realized that the winter storm that was scheduled to arrive in the afternoon was upon us. I didn't have the heart to bundle everyone so early for a trip so far from home. We aren't totally out of supplies and only in need of a few things, really. I put a beef roast into the oven so that it will be done by supper time. My husband had the day off, so we declared this an "official snow day."

So, the boys and their Dad bundled up and set out for the big hill with sleds to have some snow fun. With as many layers as our youngest had on, I certainly hope he didn't fall along the way! I suppose it's hard to resist the beautiful, powdery snow. Not so for me. I'm quite content to sit here, with my cup of hot coffee and nice warm sweater around my shoulders. I think the chickens share my opinion of the weather, as I haven't seen a single one peek out of their house all day! They have updated the forecast and I think we're expecting about six inches instead of three.

Other than watching the snow fall, I added some carrots and potatoes to the roasting pan and started looking through my cookbooks for an extra special cake recipe for my sister's birthday Saturday. I've also done a bit of "window shopping" online for a pretty pattern of everyday dishes. I'm in need of a new set and I haven't seen what I'm looking for just yet. I looked at the Caterer's set from Pottery Barn. It's just classic white, but comes in a set of twelve. I really prefer a pattern, though the number would be nice for large dinners.

The snowmen returned with red faces and the need to thaw out and have supper. By then, the house smelled wonderful! They shed their layers and hung all of their gloves, scarves and such by the fire, all the while laughing hysterically about the afternoon they had. My husband showed me video proof of why a man his age has no business on a sled! A neighbor dropped by briefly after supper and then went carefully on her way home. We played a few rounds of "Apples to Apples" and laughed a lot. We placed a pan on the deck to catch some fresh snow for ice-cream.

As evening falls, the snow continues to as well, so we'll just stay in our home in the woods by the fire, and let it.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - Sounds wonderful!

This sounds like a perfectly wonderful day! I love the snow and we do not get much here in the Hampton Roads area. I am hoping to get some snow tomorrow, but being so close to the coast we normally get the cold and the gray, but no white stuff.
I also like looking at it from the comfort and warmth of my home while sipping on something hot and creamy, too! It sounds like you and your family had a great day and a wonderful meal. I do hope you have many more days as wonderful as this one.
Sincerely,
Sharon

Sounds like you enjoyed a lovely day....... glad that dad was able to enjoy spending the day sledding with his boys.... treasured memories for sure. Send some of that snow our way...... we have had very little this winter, and I miss the white stuff....it's very cold here in Missouri.... below zero, but the sun is shining brightly...... but I much prefer the white to the brown......
Blessings,
gloria

I would love to see it snow for a day or two here, but with no heat here in the house, except space heaters {and no hot water!} I guess I would be better off without it!

Thanks for posting and praying!!! We need it, desperately!!

Sounds like a great day followed by a contented night.

We ended up w/about 6" so I'm sure you did, too.

I've been sick w/a stomach flu for 2 days and ate 2 oranges today - WOW! - it was heaven on earth! I'm SO hungry but still queezy, so I'm taking in slow. I really hate these hot...cold...hot AND cold spells.

Hope you all stay well.

"SimpleFolk" comes from my love of simpler times and old ways. I have such a great respect for my ancestors. They were hard working, clean living "plain folks" who loved the Lord and left quite a legacy. I delight in clothes on the line, blue Mason jars, old wire baskets full of beautiful brown eggs, and anything with chipping paint. This is my journal for our daily life here on our farm. Thank you for visiting with me.

In The Farm Kitchen

Farm Kitchen
~~~~~~~~~~~
I like my kitchen. The big shining stove with its friendly wood fire; copper kettle singing its contralto song; plump black pot with its bubbling savory stew.
The rich, golden smell of cornbread ready to take from the oven, blending with the piquant spiciness of hot gingerbread. I like the wide painted floorboards and the red geraniums in the windows; the little brown pots with trailing ivy.
The view of the road where I can watch the R.F.D. man drive up to the mailbox.
I like to see the table set for supper, the red cloth, blue napkins and cream colored dishes. The cat lies curled on the rocking chair cushion. Shep lies beside the stove watching every move.
Soon I'll hear his footsteps coming through the woodshed and the soft clink of milk pails. Storms may lash outside; here in my kitchen--all is warm and safe.
A FARMER'S NOTEBOOK ~~~~~~~~~~
SPRING: half-cold, half-warm the April wind tugs at the chestnut's mane; he sets his hooves deep in the earth and furrows are left behind. Swallows call wildly to their wheeling loves.
SUMMER: the tall corn talks in the amber day; the tiger lilies bloom in the river marsh. The hay is in, the timothy meadows sway beneath the crow's black crying, slow and harsh.
AUTUMN: the heifers come down from the golden hill; the dooryard rose-hips have the hardness of coral; supper smoke rises straight and the nights are a chill; beneath the red maple leaves the ground lies sorrel.
WINTER: before green dawn the lantern light in the breathing barn casts a circle of the color of honey; hills climb through stars, my acres are drifted white; and my heart knows the taste of a good year strong and sunny.
