Yukon TRIP

On our way to the Yukon in Canada we saw lots of wild life. Between all of us in the car we saw 5 black bears and one brown bear. I really wanted to get a good picture of a bear, but they were gone too fast. We also saw caribou, herds of bison, mountain goats and sheep and big horn sheep as well as coyotes and smaller woodchucks.

At the Canadian border, the man asked some questions, then he asked, "where are you going?"
My mom said, "To the Yukon." Then he got a funny look on his face and asked why we were going. Then he let us through.

The computer map said it would take us 5 days to get to Whitehorse. But we made it in 2 days because we left at 4:30 or 5:00 each morning and would only stop around 8:30 or 9:00. We averaged 850 miles a day.

The reason we went to the Yukon is because my Aunt and Uncle and cousins live there. We had a great time visiting them!

Slack Rope Walking!

Recently I was able to to try walking on  a slack rope. At first my ankles were wobbly and it was hard to control them. I couldn't keep my balance. After a while I could take a step, but it was hard. Some people told me to keep my eyes straight ahead, instead of looking at my feet. It didn't seem to work at first but after a while it was almost as if where I looked was my balance. If I looked to the side I was soon off the line, but if I kept my eyes fixed at the end of the rope I could usually go farther. I had a fun time on the slack rope in the Yukon and now that I am home I think my dad will put up a slack rope here!

YOUNG DISCIPLE CAMP

This summer I went to Young Disciple Outdoor Camp. I took three main classes. Fire for Missions, science Experiments and Wilderness Survival.  We would get up at 6 am and have our devotional time. Then at 6:30 we showered. Then we had unit sharing. All the campers were divided into units. After that we went up the hill for line call, exercise and marching. (FUN!) After breakfast we would go down and clean our cabin. Some people were in tents, but my unit was in a cabin. We had to clean well for inspection. Sometimes we got blue ribbons! Next was a Bible study class. I learned a lot from it.

In science experiment class we made bottle rockets. We used pain reliever and water. We made flubber, too. It was was weird.

In Wilderness survival we made shelters and slept in them one night. We were on a hill so that night when we got into our sleeping bags we would slide down all squished up together! In the evening we had special activity. Sometimes we went swimming. More later.... have to go practice my violin...

Fountainview

                                Our Trip
Two weekends ago we went  to  Fountainview academy with our choir. Fountainview  is  an adventist academy in Canada, B.C. We worked with Craig Cleveland, the orchestra and choir director.

We left Thursday morning and met up with our caravan at the church. It takes about 7 hours to get to Fountainview  so we went  to the bathroom. Splash!!!!!! splash!!!!!!!!! OH, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of the downstairs of our church was flooded!!

We carried stuff from the Sabbath school rooms, and some people tried to rescue pianos.

Finally we were on the road, but oh,   we had  about 40 people so there were more bathroom breaks, and long ones too.

We went past the place where they have Camp Hope. And we also went past Hells Gate, which is named  because of the impassable spot in the Fraser River. And then there were tunnels,  lots of them. We tried to hold our breath through each one.

There Finally!!!!!!!!

We arrived that evening and got a bite to eat and then started to practice warm-ups.
Later we went to bed.Our family stayed at the house that my mom lived in when her family lived at
Fountainview .

Friday more practice. Then we went down to the Fraser River and jump ropped and got a little wet. In some places where the water had drawn back for a few moments, we would run over there and rock  back and forth on  unstable sand, sometimes sinking in. It was weird.

On sabbath morning we had our concert.

Then we went to the house boat .

When we got there we had a good supper, then went on a little motor boat and cannoe . Once when I was in the cannoe it tipped when the nose was pulled up on shore too far.  A girl and boy fell out, but I stayed in.

When it was dark we got in the hot tub and went off the slide. It was great fun! The water  was tingly cold.We only stayed in seconds at a time.I got a head ache though because I didn't dip my head in the hot tub each time.

On Sunday we started back towards the dock. It was a long ways. But we got to be in the hot tub all the way. Sometimes we would stop so that we could use the slide. This is glacial water. Very COLD. And remember this is CANADA  on the 6th of MAY!

We jumped off the roof of the houseboat. Thanks! Clevelands. We had a blast!

Isn't She Cute????

I guessed right this time!! We went down to the yellow barn to get one more egg for our incubator when I lifted up the hen, this is what I saw!
Didn't I say they would be hatching around the 20th??
The other eggs in the incubator are peeping and pecking. No cracks yet.

Sprout Puss

Some weeks ago I decided to grow some more lentil sprouts. So I got out the hemp bag put some lentils in it  and watered it for about 1 to 2 weeks instead of 3 days!!!! After they had grown a lot, we decided to take them out. It was hard to get them out nicely, though, because the roots were tangled together. But we managed. That evening I cut a piece of tomato for the nose. Mom was peeling apples with the apple peeler so she gave me the apple core ends. It turned out funny looking!!

Chicks

Yippy!! Mom let the hen set!!
Badger has 11 eggs, but today we took two to put in our incubator. I'm hoping for chicks from the 20th of April to the 22nd. The hen is in the yellow barn, the cat's home, eeeek!!

We have trouble keeping the barn bug-less though, as you can see, there are lots of bugs. At one point the eggs were crawling with them. So I put flea powder on the eggs, on top of the hen, and around the nest. It might have helped some. It didn't seem to me that there were too many bugs on the eggs yesterday, but there was lots in the area of the nest. So I have moved her into our rabbit nesting box. I put it behind a board in the hay - still in the yellow barn.

Today when I got two eggs for the incubator I used a plastic bag because I didn't want bugs on me. When I got the eggs a whole bunch got on the bag and lots even got on me. I didn't even bother putting the hen back. I washed up and ran to the house so wouldn't get so many on me. Mom did some research and found out that they are chicken mites.  I know from experience they are hard to squish. We are trying out some type of powder special for mites.

The other day mom turned the incubator on to see if it worked. But yesterday morning it wasn't very hot inside. We thought it was because it was cold in the laundry room. But now I think that it might have partly been that our little thermostat wasn't set right. Now it is running a pretty steady rate of 100 to 101 degrees. And the humidity is about 72% right now.
We candled the two eggs yesterday and the airsack is very big. This means that it's life in the shell is almost over. Yippy!  Hatching soon!

Squish!!! I just squished another mite. Ewwww!!!

My Tomato Plants

Last fall I had a plan to have indoor tomato plants for the winter. It didn't happen very soon but I planted in February in the laundry room. They didn't grow at first because it was so cold. I didn't take very good care of them either.

Awhile after the dirt had dried up and I took them out of the laundry room and gave them a good watering. AND they GREW!!! The fertilizer makes them grow over night, it seems like.

Once I gave them houseplant fertilizer that came as little green sticks. The leaves started to burn. So I took as much fertilizer as I could out of the soil and gave them a good soaking. That helped.

They are about 3 feet tall and I have transplanted them twice. They keep me busy enough with all the things I have to do with suckering and pollenating them.

One of my tomotoes has a bad spot on it. Does anybody know what to do? I have given them seaweed liquid and other fertilizer in the past. But I don't know what to give them now. My Dad thinks it might have a calcium deficiency.

Our animals

This is Goody Two-Shoes, she's a Pony Of America. She's kind of lazy but we can get her to run.
We got her from a family nearby. And she has tried running away more than once! She will let more than two people get on her back, except for Dad. But when we put 4 people on doesn't usually go.
Sometimes in the summer we will ride her along the irrigation ditches and pick blackberries.

Zip Line

Last summer dad finally put up the zip line that he has been promising us. It's a lot of fun! It goes over a dip in the hill and is 100 feet long. Often we have a group of kids over and we all take turns on the zip line. Last fall I was going the wrong way and swung myself off the line and hurt myself. I broke my wrist and it took a long time for me to be able to play the violin again!
Watch my cousin on the zip line.
If you are on my home page you will not see the video. But if you go to the right hand links and click on zip line you should be able to see it. We are still figuring out this blog stuff. Sorry.

Apple Pie

Last Monday I made apple pie. It took me a long time! I didn't use the recipe we have used a lot,  but I guess that is okay. I used golden apples that came from the warehouse. They are beautiful and juicy and are very good. I only used one tablespoon of oil in the crust and I used blended oats and flour.

Usually recipes call for too much sugar and oil. I have tried using half the amount of sugar in a batch of raspberry tarts and they tasted fine.  I made this pie for my family. They said they liked it.

Tarahumara Girls

Last year we made cards to raise money for our mission trip to Mexico so I painted this picture of a Tarahumara Indian. I met a lot of Tarahumara where we went. Some live in caves, and others live in log or stone homes. During the day the women and children would be at the side of the road making and selling crafts, blankets, and baskets. The girls wear big, full skirts that are usually very colorful.

My Paintings

I like to paint a lot. I mostly used watercolors for these paintings.

Some of these pictures I painted for cards. The cards were for a fund raiser for a family who is getting a baby from China. The baby's name is Le Lu.  My mom said she printed almosta thousand cards. Most of them have been sold. We don't know how much has been made, yet, but well over $600 so far.

Rooster Talk

The last picture was my first experiment with acrylic paints. The seal and roosters  were not used in the set of cards for the China baby.
