Feelin' Feminine Challenge -My Story

Hello everyone. This entry is for the girls on here. Moms, you can check it out too!

My Story - Feelin’ Feminine Challenge

Jocelyn is doing another Feelin’ Feminine Challenge - What’s Your Story? This Challenge is to tell your story about how you came to believe in femininity. Well, I am doing this Challenge. :) Hope you are too.

I have always liked the old-fashioned looks of the dresses the women of the 1800 and the early 1900’s wore. They were so elegant and beautifully made. Somewhere in the years that have gone passed, we have lost that sense of fashion, and now we see girls and women alike dressed immodestly.

I have always wanted to wear dresses like the prairie girls did when they did their chores, or made dinner with their white aprons tied around their waists. I have always thought of women who wore long skirts and wore blouses with long-sleeves and turtlenecks. That is the way I wanted to dress.

When I was little, like 2-7, Momma let us wear shorts and tanktops. But as she read further into what the Bible had to say about how women should dress, the girls in our family could not wear shorts and could not wear tight jeans. We were allowed to wear skirts that came below the knees and sweat pants for chores, and pajama pants for bed. (To tell you the truth, I mostly wear my skirts to do barn chores in, except when one is not clean.) I am so glad I was made to wear skirts!

I have the ideas about the way a women should look because of what my Momma made me do. Of course, being the person I am, who could walk into Wal-Mart with her hair back in a ponytail, and a t-shirts with a skirt, I was all into trying on the pretty skirts made got for me.

As I grew, I started noticing that a lot of the women I saw were in spaghetti strapped shirts that were tight, and very short shorts, or mini-skirts, or tight jeans. I saw how immodestly dressed they were. You can’t even look at the front page of a magazine anymore, without seeing some half-naked person on the front. It doesn’t make me angry that they are dressed that way. I feel sorry for them that they are selling themselves short, as the saying would go. I hate going to the store in the summer because most of the girls are immodestly dressed. We have to guard our little siblings’ eyes because of it.

It is heartbreaking that no one has told these girls the way they are dressing is wrong. But in today’s world, it’s accepted. What has our society come to?

I am not trying to go on about how people should dress, and I am not trying to condemn anyone. I am simply stating my opinions on my view of femininity. So, will you take the challenge on of being a modest girl in an immodest world? A world that would tell you ‘just be yourself, no one else cares.” Actually, a lot of men notice girls and women who dress immodestly. I try to have a loose shirt, and a flowing skirt, with flipflops or tennis shoes.

How will you be judged by people?

Taking on the challenge,

      Rachel

Yes... We are the Blogger-Meeters!

This past weekend has been a lot of fun. Thursday night we tore up the carpet in the kitchen. Finally! We were all so excited about that. Dad brought tile squares home to lay down. The prep-work was the time-consuming part. We tore the carpet, then the stuff underneath it, that foamy stuff. Once we got that out, we removed all the tack-strips and staples. We couldn't move the stove and the fridge at that time so we cut around it.

Dad, Eric, Hannah and I sanded almost the whole floor Thursday night. We kids had a piece of sandpaper, while Dad used the sander. It was hard and tiring work. It made my back and my arms ache. Plus I got some of the dust in my throat. I coughed a few times while I was in bed.

Friday, we moved the fridge and sanded under it. Eric and the girls did most of that. When Dad got home, we moved the stove and got all the tack-strips and staples out of the floor. Then I sanded it with the sander. After we did that, we had to make the tiles we lined up straight. I started having a headache while we laid the first two tiles. I laid down on the couch for a bit, then took a shower. I went to bed right after that.

When I got up on Saturday morning, it was weird walking through the kitchen. I expected carpet, and the was a nice tile. It's great! Why
would people in their right minds put carpet in the kitchen? And it was a white-and-brown sort of carpet. Oh, boy, was it gross. The one time us kids spilled an entire 5-gallon bucket of hot water on the floor. It was a mess. But it's gone now. It's easier to clean, and look very nice. Almost looks like stone.

Time passed on Saturday, and we were rushing to get everything cleaned up for when Sprittibee and her kids came. The time passed quickly. Pretty soon, we were still cleaning but took a break. The girls and Mom watched a movie about Queen Elizabeth. I got on the computer since it was free to do whatever I needed to.

On Sunday morning, everyone was excited about getting to meet Sprittibee. We rushed around all day. I bet we cleaned the counters in the kitchen every ten minutes. We wanted everything to be perfect. It was so funny when they pulled into the driveway. Sprittibee was taking pictures out the window, and they were driving very slowly.

They came in and dinner was done. We ate. It was so good. Amanda made mashed potatoes with a chicken noodle gravy on top, with green beans and peas. Oh it was good! Sprittibee had to take some picture of a plate, Morgan's to be exact. It was funny. I had her camera some of the time. It was fun taking pictures of her kids, herself, and her mom, Chicki.

Sprittibee downloaded all of the 800-some pictures she took on the way down here. There were so many! She had two cards and they were both full of pictures. Some of the pictures were really cool. Then, around 12:30am, we went upstairs so Dad could sleep on the couch. We talked until 4am, just random stories, talking about things. It was really fun. Poor Morgan tried to stay awake with us but she fell asleep by 2:30am. I had to sleep in my little brother's bed with Hannah so Mom could sleep in mine. I was sort of scrunched but I slept good, because I was so tired!

Got up around 10:11am yesterday morning. They had already done chores... so there was nothing for me to do but stand around and help with whatever I needed to. They got all their stuff packed and into the car. Then Sprittibee suggested we go to Chipotle's for lunch. We had been talking about it the night before. I had never been there before. We went and got lots of pictures. When we were leaving Sprittibee needed all of us in a picture, so we got all of our pictures taken. There was also this beautiful cherry tree surrounded by these orange and yellow flame-looking tulips. Oh, it was so pretty. We stood in front of it so that was the background for the pictures. She also got some pictures of Lucy and the flowers. Lucy *loves* flowers. Practically adores them!

But soon, too soon, it was time for them to leave. We gave and got hugs and "See you in Texas". Eric and Hannah were thinking of stashing away in their van, but they were forced into our own van. There were many goodbyes, and finally we drove off. We went to Wal-Mart, and they followed us. I thought maybe they needed help getting out of town. Nope, they were just getting gas. That was the last time I saw them. :(

Mom and I went into Wal-Mart and got some fruit to eat on the home for the kids. Then we got Mom, Jocelyn and me a pop from the machines. We got the Littles a can of Twist Up to share. I got a cherry coke. They didn't have anything else I wanted. Amanda didn't want anything. Then we got to get some ice cream at Dairy Queen. That was a good treat. I got an Oreo blizzard. It was great! I got a small, but it was enough. Hannah could barely finish hers.

We got home and did the regular stuff. We had such a fun time with Sprittibee and her kids, and her mother. Just a fantastic time. I can't wait to see them again! Sprittibee said she would send us some of the pictures she took. I can't wait to get them. She has a really nice camera. I really liked it. All in all, we had a wonderful time with them, and I can't wait to see them again!

Cleaning Out Stalls...

The last two weeks have been very tiring ones! With everyone being sick, Eric and I have been doing most of the chores by ourselves. Jocelyn has been sick and since Amanda sold the horses, she hasn't gone down. That leaves Eric and me to do all the barn chores.

Anyway, last week I noticed that the chicken stall floor was a lot higher inside the stall than outside the door. I'm not sure how high it was compared to the outside, but it was probably about a foot high. Yes, if you can believe I would let it get that high and filthy. We put the chickens in there in the beginning of August last year. Eric had cleaned it out a few months back when some people came to look at the horses. The goats used to be in that stall. So when we cleaned it out, the smell was almost unbearable. Mom was down there helping us clean it out. Dad and the girls helped a bit but it was mostly Mom, Eric and I who cleaned it out.

When I saw how tall it was to the regular floor, the concrete one, I was surprised. The first morning, I started cleaning it out after we finished the chores. Eric came and helped me, but I was soon tired. We only cleaned out a little of where you walk in. The next day I went out around 4:30-5:00pm. We cleaned out the entire stall by 6:30pm. Jocelyn came down and was amazed at what we had did. Then she said, "Now you want to clean out the goat stall?" with a smile. The next day she couldn't get out of bed. I was tired from cleaning out the chicken stall so I put off cleaning out the goat stall for about two days.

Mom and Amanda have been getting things we plan to get rid of out of rooms and soon there was a pile of boxes in the kitchen that needed to be gotten out. I put that off for a couple of days too. Finally I remembered I needed to take it out to the garage. I took Blondie out there with me to keep me company for awhile. She loved it. I'd call her and she would come to where I was. She found a tennis ball and wanted to play. I was busy working, so I couldn't play with her. She had a fun time nosying around the garage. I got a lot of it cleaned out, picked all the shoes and toys up, and stacked the tubs that were out there. I got a lot of stuff cleaned up. Eric helped me to get the boxes out of the kitchen and put it out in the garage. The kitchen seems so much bigger now that there isn't a bunch of stuff in the middle of the floor.

Well, I got a little of the goat stall cleaned out a few days ago. I haven't done anymore. It snowed here a few days ago. We got about 8-9 inches of that white stuff on the ground. I am hoping it will melt but then Dad said we are supposed to get about six more inches by Saturday. Blah... blah... blah... I hate Indiana weather! Well I hope we get some fair weather soon... I'm sick of the cold weather. I want to walk outside and sink my toes into nice, new fresh Spring grass... oh well, it will come soon!

All right, that is all for now. I am going to go comment now. I am sorry if I haven't answered comments on here. I have been meaning to! Have a lovely week! Many blessings to all who read this... :)

I Apologize...

For not posting in so long. I have a few reasons I have not been able to post before now though. One, as you have probably read on one of my family's blogs, we have been sick again. Dad was the first one to get sick. Isaac got sick a few days after Dad. He got better two days after that. Hannah was sick for about five days. Then poor baby Lucy was sick for three days. Dad woke me up a few days ago to hold her at 7:30 in the morning. She just laid her head on my shoulder. She was so sick... poor Luli! She is better now. Caleb is still sick. He hasn't thrown up in a few days though. He wants to get up but Mom won't let him. He need to rest more so he can get well. Please pray for him. Jocelyn also is not feeling well today. Please pray for her also.

I wasn't feeling good a couple days ago. I have taken four showers these past three days. My ear is really what has been bothering me. Mom said she thinks I have an ear infection. I noticed it when I got out of the shower a few days ago. It felt like there was water in it. But I knew there wasn't. I have been taking medicine, and rubbing goot on my ear. (Goot is garlic olive oil treatment. It works GREAT.) I had a headache when I woke up this morning. Mom gave me a spoonful of honey to eat. It made me feel better at once. After a bit, I came downstairs. I took some cold and cough medicine (I still have a cough) and Mom put some more goot on my ear. My throat is still sore. When I cough, it hurts my chest and throat. I would like you to pray for me.

In other news: We got our DSL hooked up! We now have two computers online. Soon to have three. We need something else for our older computer to get it online. Paulie was so excited when we got it hooked up because it was the first DSL he has hooked up. Thank you Paulie! It has been so much fun though. Mom and one of the girls have been talking back and forth on IM. It is so funny to sit and watch them. They are one room apart! How funny! It's a blessing from the Lord... :)

Animal News: We sold the horses. Yes, we did. The lady who bought them came and got them today. She bought both of them. Amanda posted about selling them on her homestead blog, My Learning Experience. We don't have horses now. I hope if we do get another horse, or two even, that we get one that is fully trained! Actually the lady who bought them is going to train them and she said if she gets them trained enough until summer, we could come over and ride them. She has seven or eight other horses. She just got a new one too. That will be so cool to ride them... :) When Amanda talked to her a bit ago, she said they were so happy to be out in a pasture. I bet they loved it.

Goats: Jocelyn thinks Heidi is pregnant. She thinks she will kid. She didn't noti

e it before. When she kidded last time, it didn't turn out so good. She lost two kids. Keci (her only kid) Jocelyn thinks is pregnant too. She thought she was pregnant before Heidi. Well, Keci is the smallest of all the goats. She may have a hard birth. We are keeping an eye on them. Checking on them every once in awhile. If Heidi or Keci kid in the next two weeks, Jocelyn won't be able to go to Paulie's 18th birthday party... haha. Well, just pray that if they do, they will have a smooth birth, the both of them.

I have not forgotten about the chickens! They are well. Since we got about eight inches of snow last night, they were not out in the yard at all. But yesterday they were out all over! Since I have been sick, I haven't been able to go to the barn. Seeing them out is so fun though. We are still getting TONS of eggs from them. Our second fridge is full of egg cartons. Anyone want to buy any eggs? Farm fresh! We did have the owner of a market-type store we shop at every week ask us for eggs. He said he would pay about $1.50 for a dozen! Whoa. Sure no one wants any? :o)

I am also having a bit of trouble with Blondie. Not about her paw; that is completely healed. I don't have to take her out with a plastic bag over it anymore. No, it's about her eating. About four months ago, Mom read some stuff about dry dog food online. She found that it was better to feed dogs raw foods rather than dry foods. I have been feeding them oatmeal mixed with eggs and bacon for breakfast. I would feed them raw chicken every other night. That would balance them a lot better. Pemberly will eat anything you give him. He even chased down a cottontail and was playing with the head. Blech... Anyway, Blondie won't eat her breakfast. This has been going on for about a week now. I feed her, she'll eat a little and leave the rest until night. She won't even eat it then. Mom said that she might be pregnant and that may be the cause. I am still not sure. I do sometimes give her scraps but Pemberly is usually the one who gets the scraps. She eats the chicken but not the eggs and oatmeal. She does eat a little of it, then doesn't eat anymore and has to go out. Well, just pray for her too.

Book News: I am still reading The Return of the King. I am almost done with it though, about five or six more chapters left. I am on the chapter where they have decided on going to Mordor to draw out Sauron's army so Frodo and Sam have a safe passage through the Land of Shadow. I also read Little Faith by Mrs. O.F. Walton. It is about a little girl named Faith. It's a small book but I loved it. I did a review on it for Growing In Grace Magazines online. I am doing book reviews on the site. I was thinking of reading over Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan again. I very much enjoyed that book. Thanks to the encouragement received from Auntie Christina on "holding on, it gets less confusing." I am so glad I held out though. I must say, though that I enjoyed reading bout Pilgrim's wife's journey to the Celestial City rather than Pilgrim's. Maybe I will think differently when I read it again. Does anyone have any good books to recommend to me that they enjoy? I am still making up a list of books! :)

Baby News: Lucy is getting a top tooth in. Yes, now she will have a top tooth. I will try to post on her blog. I know she hasn't posted anything new on it in awhile. She loves listening to You Are My Sunshine song though. Amanda got this cute little flower kind of person that sings it. She got it when she was born. She loves to listen to it. When you start singing it, she will look around for it. It's funny to watch her try to mouth the words to sing with you. Such a little doll! :)

Ok, was that post long enough for you? haha. I try to post long posts so you can read a little and then come back and read more when I don't post in awhile. Thanks for bearing with me to the end of it though. I will truly try to post more often. I have kind of gotten out of the habit of posting on my actual blog days, haven't I? I am the worst at commenting right now. And Levi, no you aren't bossy most of the time. Only a little bit of the time. :) I do look at your blog when the girls and Mom have it open, so I kind of keep up with you. :) TIME FOR COMMENTING NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!

About the Suarezs' Visit, and Me...

Romans 15:4

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

All right, I know you have been waiting for me to post and leave some comments, so I decided to give you a brief post about what we have been doing.

The Suarezs' came over last night and left this after at 12pm. They are going to a conference and thought they would stop in for the night, to *everyone's* joy. So we got to spend last night up very late talking.

Amanda made Paulie some white chocolate chip cookies. Then the people who didn't want those, she made some regular chocolate chip cookies. I had to finish them because she didn't want to. I put some on a tray, and then stuck the rest of the cookie dough in the freezer: I would finish them today... I still haven't yet! :)

Susanna is so cute! She is just a little peanut! I got to hold when she was done eating and she went right to sleep with me. Then Auntie had to take her and burp her so she wouldn't be cranky in the car. She is so tiny compared to
Lucy!

We also got to open the gift from Auntie Christina. She sent matching purple outfits for Sus and Luc. They are just precious! Very cute. Auntie gave Lucy a matching outfit, a cute pink one, the same as Susanna. We dressed them both up in that, and got pictures with the purple outfits around them. She is already almost two months old... That is crazy!

They forgot Susanna's formula, so we will be sending that with a few other things we are giving them.

About me:
I still have a runny nose. Not runny, I guess, just stuffed up and I have to blow it every so often. It's really a pain, but it's the way it is. :(

Chickens:
We have been getting lots more eggs! They love the nice sunny weather, they are out and about!

So, I have been good. How is everyone on here? I hope you are all good! Time to go comment!

Another Little Blessing From The Lord - Susanna Hope Suarez...

We (well, the Suarez family did at least, but we all wished we were there, right?) welcomed the prettiest little girl into the world this morning at 12:27 a.m. That precious little sweetheart is Susanna Hope Suarez, born to the Suarez family on November 27th, 2007. She was 5lbs 14oz. She was 20 inches long, and she has a little bit of hair. Here is the complete information, if you want it more plainly:

And she has a little bit of hair

Here is a picture of her:

Isn't she adorable? She looks like a sweetheart, don't you think?

I bet they are so happy she is finally here; or at least, Auntie is! LOL We talked to Paulie this morning. He called to tell us about her, and he was bragging about her! Well, you can't blame him, you know, she looks so adorable! And, he hasn't had a baby to hold that was his own sibling since Julia was born. I was so excited when Lucie was born.

She looks so much like them all, you know. When I first saw her picture, I was trying to figure out who she looked like. I finally thought she looked like all of them.

I am awaiting the time when I will be able to hold this precious little bundle of joy in my own arms when we get to see them again, which I hope will be VERY SOON. I mean, they saw Lucie when she was only 10 days old, right? LOL. As her older sister, I demand to see her!

Alright, if I have to wait, I WILL wait to see her... I guess... Oh, but PLEASE stop at Paulie's blog, and post a comment on the post he did!

Pictures of Daisy and Blondie

I thought it was about time that I posted some pictures on here. I decided that you’d all like to see my Bunny Daisy and my Puppy Blondie.

Here is Daisy:

Daisy1.jpg image by SoulRestES

Daisy is a Himalayan rabbit. I got her about a month ago. She is 2yo. Her real name is Nami. I named her Daisy because I hadn’t known that before. So her name is Nami Daisy.

And here is Blondie:

I got Blondie at the end of February, so she is still very young. She will have her 1st birthday on the 12th of December. She is a golden retriever/lab mix. Her mother was a black retriever, and her father was a yellow lab. She got her mother’s fur and her father’s colour.

So there you have it, my pets. Belladonna is mine, but you have already seen her at Jocelyn’s blog. I will have to take some more pictures of them, and post them.

I will be changing my blog template soon. As you can see I put some icons on the side. I will be adding some blinkies and getting my template up soon!

Oh, stop over at my homeschool blog, The Milk & Honey Tea-House, to see some Fall pictures!

My 14th Birthday...

I know, I have taken WAY too long to finish this, but give me a break, I had to do the THC! So you are all dying to hear about it right? Well, I’ll start out with the night before.

I was downstairs in our parlour, writing in my Journal and Eric comes rushing down the stairs. He has two packages from the Novak’s Box. They were from Elizabeth. In one was an envelope. It contained the letter I have been waiting for, a Forget-Me-Not bracelet, and a dip pen. And there was also a fan with old fashions ladies on it. In the other was a bottle of walnut ink that Elizabeth and Marmee made. I was very excited when I saw there was the letter I was waiting for.

Then I went upstairs and Amanda, Jocelyn, Mother and I watched “The Ultimate Gift”. It’s a new movie, and I love it. You should check it out! Then as I was saying good night to my Journal, writing, “I guess I will be the first to say Happy Birthday.” But as I was writing it, Jocelyn comes in and says, “Good night, and Happy Birthday.” It was 2 o’clock in the morning. Then I went into the attic to say good night to Mother, and she said “Oh yay! I’m the first one to say Happy Birthday!” I told that Jocelyn had already said it to me, and she said, “that brat.” Then I went to bed.

November 5th, 2007, my birthday.

I woke up at 10:00, and had to get out of bed because they were all calling me. I really wanted to stay in bed, because I had been up so late. I went into the attic and Mother starts singing “Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday!” in a really high-pitched fast-tempo song. Of course all Eric and Hannah joined in.

Then I got a call from my Grandma Dixon. I talked to her for about ten minutes or so. Then I went back and sat on the couch. I asked Mother, “Do we have any Oreos?” She said yes, and I asked if I could go get them, and she said yes. So I had Oreos for breakfast. Good nutritious breakfast, huh? Well, I did have some milk. That’s got to count for something!

Anyways, then Amanda, Jocelyn, Hannah, and I went to the library to comment and blog. I talked with Mother on IM. She got a MSN for me to use when we go to the library. We stayed there for two hours, then we got some pretzels from Dollar General. Then went home.

My Grandpa called and said that he and his wife wanted to come over before they went to dinner, so when we got home, we were rushing to make sure everything was clean. We spent about 45 minutes with them. They gave me my present. I will tell what all my presents are in a minute. Then Daddy got home and we ate pizza for dinner. He likes the stuff crust from Pizza Hut, and we like Papa John’s, so he got two of each.

We did the animals and then ate some more pizza. Then Mother did my cakes-in-a-cone thingy. I don’t know what they are called. She found the recipe off someone's blog! That's funny right?!

Mother came up with this online. She asked if I wanted cupcakes instead of a plain cake and I said that would be fine, so she found the recipe for it. Caleb had a dainty time licking the frosting off of them when no one was in the kitchen.

Well, then we went upstairs to open my gifts.

Here is a list of what I got for my birthday:

A Bath & Body Works Sweet Pea body lotion and shower gel from Grandpa and Dorothy

The Girlhood Home Companion from Marmee. It’s a big book of all the GHC’s they’ve every done, except the most recent. THANK YOU SO MUCH, MARMEE!

The two packages and a handmade scarf from Elizabeth

Hannah’s trinket gifts

A bath towel set from Amanda. She asks me every time I take a shower where is my towel? I told her I didn’t have one...

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe cartoon movie. Amanda and Jocelyn used to watch it when they were little.

And the last thing was a big package of writing paper.

So there you have it. A post about my 14th birthday, including a list of what I got and pictures. What else? Oh, yes, I want to thank everyone who threw a blog-party for me! I checked out all of them, and I realized I got several tea parties thrown for me. Thank you for signing my Linky. And special thanks to Mother and Jocelyn who put this whole thing together.

Oh, yes. There was three poems written for me. One is from my dear friend Kylie aka Narniagirl, one from Rebekah aka TheLordsDaughter, and the other is from Mellie aka mellarooski. Thank you three!

Here's poem for you, Rachel,
On your fourteenth birthday.
Now I'd like to say some things
About you, if I may.

You blog about birthdays,
Your family and books.
I enjoy your blog a lot,
But not only because of its good looks!

You comment pretty frequently,
And I am really glad when you do.
For you usually have something encouraging to say,
Even if it's a simple "Love you!"

You're sweet, loving, caring and kind,
A wonderful friend--that you are.
Not only that but you love Jesus lots
With all of your heart.

We love you lots,
All of us do.
You give to us
And now we're giving back to you.

All of your blog-friends are here
To wish you a very happy birthday,
And an even better
Fourteenth year!
Love,
  Kylie

Mellie's: (this one wasn't written by her, but she posted it for me!)

Deep down in every girl’s heart
In the place where she dreams she’s a part
Of a land far away, a land so dazzling.
That every time she enters it, it takes her breath away.

A land of magnificence and gallantly grandeur
Where all girls join to spend their young years together.
Elegant tea parties with beautiful dresses
With majestic crowns in their sweet, pretty tresses.

Glittering castles way up in the clouds
Where angels come and sing them to sleep.
Where the rivers glisten and are so cool and deep.
Where ponies run wild and birds fly free.

Every day something new happens
Everyday something sends thrills to your soul
Without this land a little girls’ heart just wouldn’t be whole.
So cherish these days when you dream you’re a princess.

Because you are. And you always will be.
Just you watch and see.
Keep on dreaming and reach for the sky
Be a princess everyday, look straight into the horizon and fly.

I remember those dreams I used to dream
When I was cute and little like you
But you never stop dreaming through all that you do.
There is always a dream waiting just for you.

Yes, it’s true, in time your dreams will change.
And you won’t always dream of being a princess in a far away land.
But your dreams will always send thrills right down to your soul
Because without them your heart just wouldn’t be whole.

I know, because I’m not a little girl anymore
But I still dream, everyday, and they still make me fly and soar.
But of all the dreams that have changed, I still dream of bring a princess…
In a far away land…pouring tea for my friends in my little girl world.

I don't have Rebekah's here, sorry. But I will post it!

Some News...

I wanted to post some news of the things I have been doing around here...

Of my drawing for my blog-friends:

I wanted to tell all of you that I have been working on some drawings for some of my blog-friends, particularly the Novak’s. They came up for Amanda’s party last Saturday, a week ago tomorrow, and her birthday was a week ago today.

The reason I am drawing them for them is because I wouldn’t show Eric my other drawings and so I told him I would send them some. Well, I have finished them all and I am going to send them as soon as I get the letter Elizabeth sent me.

Marmee is a very good artist. She loves to draw and sketch. She has made up a book called “How to draw Hollyhocks”. I have not had the pleasure of reading or looking at it, but I am going to get it as soon as I can! In the GHC (Girlhood Home Companion), there is a post she wrote about how to plant a good character, and she uses growing flowers as the design for doing it. Here is the poem she put at the front of the article:

Sow a thought, and you reap an act;
Sow an act, and you reap a habit;
Sow a habit, and you reap a character;
Sow a character, and you reap a destiny.

This is very true... If you have the most recent issue of the GHC, you know what the article says. She is a very good writer, and very good Marmee! Love you, Marmee! Oh, the Novak’s sent me a birthday package, but I won’t know what is in it until my birthday. It’s the rule that we can’t open packages until the day of our birthday. She said she really wants what Marmee gave me, so it must be a good one!

I also drew a picture for another blog-friend: Jessica. She is eleven-years-old, and is very sweet. Here is username: jessica0439. She doesn’t have a blog on here; only on homeschoolblogger. I drew it for today, and I will be sending it to her as soon as possible.

I also drew two pictures for Sharla, if you haven’t been to her blog already, you can go see it!

I had told Eric to go there to see what a bad artist I really am (he didn’t believe me) and he said to me in a comment: “whatever/duh/der. I told you you could draw.” What do you think of my drawings?

I can draw anyone a picture. Just tell me what you want me to draw, and I will see if I can draw it for you. I really like drawing birds, plants and flowers. I have tried to draw Daisy, but it didn’t look like her at all!

Of Movies:

Amanda
got The Notebook from the library, and we watched (parts of) it the other night. I couldn’t watch the whole thing because there was some stuff in it, but I got the storyline down. It’s about this woman who is an older woman and she has Alzheimer's, and she has a notebook/journal that she wrote in the cover of “If I can’t remember this, read it to me.“ So her husband is telling the story of how they met, and how they married. It’s sad the way they ended it, though. They die.

The other movie I got to see was Spider-Man 3. I liked the last half of it. He acts like a nit-wit for the first half of the movie. But I liked the way the characters were played out. Harry and Peter team up to defeat The Sandman and Venom. He acts really stupid when he has the Venom in him, but he doesn‘t get it until half way through the movie. I enjoyed watching it. It’s action packed, and has some very funny on some parts.

Seen any good movies lately?

Of Books:

I am still reading Treebeard. Since Amanda’s birthday, I haven’t been able to get back onto reading it everyday. But I will.

Have you heard of the HSB Literary Club? Mom and Amanda are now moderating of it. We got the book we are going to be discussing a few days ago. It’s called “The Hedge of Thorns”. It’s a very thin book, only 90-some pages long, and it won’t take that long to read. We are hoping to start it soon. You can still be a part of the discussion, just get the book, and you can follow up on where we are!

Of Our Animals:

We are still trying to get the horses sold. We haven’t had anymore people come by to look at them. The lady still wants Dulcy, and I’m hoping we can keep Estrella. It’s in God’s hands!

All the rest of the animals are fine. Daisy is fine too!

Alright, I think that is all for this post! Please stop over at my homeschool blog and read the latest there!

When I Draw...

On Saturday night, I got out a piece of paper and a book about Butterflies and Moths and How They Live by Robert M. McClung, intending to draw a butterfly or moth. When I want to draw something, like an animal, insect or plant, I have look for something to draw, I can’t just start drawing something. I have to spend time to figure out what I am going to draw.

I was sitting at my desk, looking through the book, trying to find a moth or butterfly to draw. I slowly turned each page, looking over each drawing carefully, looking at the different kinds of moths and butterflies. I got to the end of the book and went over it again. Then I saw a curious drawing of two monarch butterflies, and had to find out what they were doing. So, instead of drawing one, I read almost the entire book, learning lots of different things I hadn’t known about the beautiful creatures God made to flutter and fly around me when I’m in the fields.

I learned a thing or two about trapping/capturing techniques and about preserving them to study and draw. I also learned about how to build a mount to hold them on while you study them. I will post a few tips I picked up from the book: (Note: All the writings below are taken from the book Butterflies and Moths and How They Live by Robert M. McClung.)

A good place to collect hawkmoths is a flower garden at dusk. At this time many of these swift moths come to the flowers to feed. They are particularly fond of petunias, phlox, and four-o’clocks. You have to be quick to catch them, for they dart from blossom to blossom.

Moths are especially attracted by ultraviolet light, and if you set up one of these lamps to shine on a sheet, many different species are sure to come to it.

Butterflies are sometimes captured in box traps baited with overly ripe fruit. Male moths can be captured at night in much the same way, except that a newly emerged female must be used as the bait. Only males of this particular species will come to the trap.

A strong-smelling bait is prepared by mixing brown sugar, molasses, and beer together. Some collectors recommend adding crushed, overripe bananas, or even a teaspoon or two of rum. In early evening, while it is still light, this powerful-smelling bait is painted on a number of tree trunks or posts along some well-defined path. The route should be in or a woodland, not out in the middle of a cleared field. A warm night, just before or after a thunderstorm, is one of the best times for sugaring.

After dark, the collector walks along his trapline with a flashlight and checks each tree or post. He must take the moths feeding at the bait quickly, for they are wary. Sometimes the best method for capturing them is to hold the net or killing jar just below each specimen. Most moths tend to fall downward when disturbed.

Ok, so now you know a little bit about catching and hunting butterflies and moths. Why not learn about them mating? Here is a little about how they court and mate:

Among moths, it’s the female that attracts the male with a particular scent given off by glands in her abdomen. The male has sensitive antennae that detects this odor and guides him to the female.

Each specimen of giant silk moth has a particular time for courtship and mating. Polyphemus and Luna moths usually mate around midnight or during a short period just before dawn. Cecropia moths mate sometimes around 3am. Promethea moths, on the other hand, mate from late afternoon until dusk.

Now here is a bit about butterflies:

Unlike moths, most male butterflies locate a mate by sight. The colour and pattern of the female’s wings, and the way she flies, are all recognition signals. Some male butterflies can be attracted to paper dummies that have the same colour and pattern as those of the female. The males do not discover the trickery until they are very close to the dummies.

Among many butterflies , the male has scent organs on his body or wings. They give off a scent that helps to attracts the female during courtship. If you hold a male butterfly quite close to your nose, sometimes you can smell this scent. It is usually a very pleasant smell, like the odor of a spice or flower.

Milkweed butterflies, such as the monarch and its close relative the queen, have much larger brush like scent organs called hair pencils. They are usually hidden in the tip of the abdomen, but are extended during courting.

All right. I think that is all for one post. I didn’t mean it to get so long; and it was supposed to be about my drawing. I hope you learned as much as I did when I read the book about Butterflies and Moths and How They Live. I enjoyed reading about them.

Visiting With Grandparents....

Today my Grt. Grandparents, my Mom's grandparents, came over. They were here for about 2 1/2 hours. We talked, had cookies, apples, laughed, looked at my Grandfather's WW2 album Amanda is still working on, and they held Lucy. We don't get to see them often. They live about 1 1/2 away from us, and we don't go to see them a lot, so when they come down, it's a real treat.

We always get to hear about the war. He told us all about the pictures in the album. He said a lot of his war buddies just recently died. There are a lot of pictures of my Grandmother in the album too. But the thing I like most about it is the places that he went to, they got pictures of it and the land. It's really cool. He told us all about the Forts he went to and the places he went to. He said that he got sick and went to Denver, Colorado to have it treated.

My Grandmother was more interested in holding Lucy than the album, but she did look at it once Grandpa had finished looking at it. Grandma was very interested in
Jocelyn's article in the GHC (The Girlhood Home Companinion). When she was told she could take it home, she said, "I will read every word of it, right down to the numbers." So she gets to enjoy that at home.

I hardly said anything during the whole time they were here. I am always called the "quiet one" and always said, "you noisy girl" and things like that. I rather enjoy sitting quietly and listening to all the conversation that everyone else is talking about. I can learn much more than if I was talking myself. I like listening rather than talking. I hate going somewhere where I know I will have to talk to people who I don't know. I just smile if something is said about me. I'm quiet all the time, except... when I'm by myself. I talk to myself a lot.

That is how all my stories get their start, by talking and acting out a story, then I put it into words. I just started one last night actually. It's about Romans and Jews. It's actually a love story. But I only get to page two. I wrote it out, not typed it so it took me longer to write. It will be a book when it's finished. I have four other books that I have started but not finished yet. But I will some day. They will be some day.

And I'm drawing/painting Auntie a picture, which I will either send or give to her when I see her again. I am still in the process of putting the finishing touches on the sketching, then I will paint it, using watercolour paints.

Oh, please stop over to the
Backyard and enter in to the Picture With A Thousand Words. It's really funny. And there will be recipes up there too.

Canning - My First Experience...

I canned for the first time on Wednesday, Thursday and yesterday. I have never had anything to do with canning before now. Mom wanted to try to can last year, but we never got around to doing it. I never had any experience canning at all. This was a big deal for me, being the cook, country, wanna-live-in-the-1800's girl that I am.

My Mom's Grandfather, my Great-Grandfather, canned lots of tomatoes. He told us all about it when we went up to see them a few months ago. My Grandmother said she didn't like canning because it was hot work. She said that Grandpa was always the one who did the canning. But since he's old, he can't do it anymore.

Here is what I did with our tomatoes:

I washed the smaller ones first. Put them in the food processor. I made it so that they were  finely chopped. As I was processing them, I put the chopped tomatoes in pans. I used two bigs pots and two smaller pans. I'm not sure how many quarts there were, but there was a lot. In the end, I got 14 jars filled. Then Mom and I between 1-3am put the canning pot of water on the stove to boil water to seal the jars. It takes 40-45min. to seal them, and you have to have the water a rolling boil, so we put half of them in the fridge to keep overnight. The water was boiling when we put the jars in, but then stopped because of the coolness of the jars. It was 2am before it even started to boil... AHHHH! The tray to put the jars in only hold 6 jars, and it takes 45min. to boil them. Another AHHHH! We put the other jars in the fridge...

Oh, yes, after I put the water on to boil, I got out our banana peppers to clean and soak. I cleaned them, cut two slits in each, and put them in salt water to soak for 12-18 hours... such a long time! We didn't have enough vinager we needed to pickle that day anyways... I thought that we would get some from Dollar General yesterday, but we never did. They had soaked for 20-some hours. We pickled them today.

On Thursday night, we sealed the more of the tomato jars. One disaster did happen while we doing this: Mom was putting the jars in, and went to take one out... and guess what? It was too big so the bottom broke off of it. It was horrid! We had to take all the jars out and DUMP OUT all the BOILING WATER that took us SO LONG to even get BOILING... (:o( Not only had we lost the boiling water, but a whole jar of TOMATO! Mom was mad about the tomato rather than the water and jar...

Here is what I did with the banana peppers:

Let them soak for however long. Then, since we forgot to tell Dad to get vinegar, so we had to put them in the fridge in a bowl. Then yesterday morning, Amanda and Eric went to Dollar General and got vinegar. I didn't put the ingredients in the pot to boil until about 3:50. Then Eric and I packed the peppers into jars. It took about two hours for it to boil, but part of the reason it wouldn't boil was because we had a big fan blowing in the kitchen to try to keep it cool. Then we poured the hot, boiling liquid in the jars on top of the peppers. Then we put them in the boiling-water-canner to seal. So, I learned a few things about canning: You have to make sure you have all the ingredients before you start your canning; all the stuff you need. It takes a long time to can, and it's very hot!

The canning book we used Ball Blue Book of Preseving. This is the recipe I used for the peppers:

          Pickled Peppers

Yield: about 16 hlaf-pints or 8 pints. We used quart jars.

We had double what the recipe said of peppers, so we doubled everything.

We had 8 packed quart jars.

4 quarts peppers (we used bananan)

1 1/2 cups canning salt (we used sea salt)

4 1/4 quarts water, divided

1/4 cup sugar

2 tbsps. horseradish, (we didn't use any)

2 cloves garlic

2 1/2 quarts vinegar

Cut two slits in each pepper. Dissolve salt in water. Pour over peppers and let stand 12-18 hours in a cool place. Drain; rinse and drain thoroughly. Comebine 2 cups water and remaining ingredients in a large saucepot. Simmer 15 minutes. Discard garlic. Bring pickling to a boil. Pack peppers into hot jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Ladle hot liquid over peppers, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Remove air bubbles. Adjust two-piece caps. Process hlaf-pints and pints 10 minutes in a boiling-water canner.

NOTE: When cutting or seeding hot peppers, wear rubber gloves to prevent hands from being burned. I did NOT wear gloves and when I was done cutting the slits, my hands were on FIRE! I would recommend if you are doing hot peppers, use gloves!

OH, one other thing: I will hosting the Homesteading Carnival this Monday. So I need lots of submissions, so please, if you have any... If you have a post you would like to submit, then go to the Homesteading Carnival to enter. I will be hosting it at my homeschoolblogger.com blog: The Milk & Honey Tea-House. I will try to have everything ready! But I need your submissions!! Thanks!!!

Thanks for reading about my first ever canning experience!

Rachel
