Goat milking, day three...

Posted in My Milking Adventures

Well, this morning, I drug myself out of of bed to go and milk the goats. Again, Bella was the good girl. I got about 1 -1/2 cups of milk from her this morning and tonight. Her treat for being so good was a couple of handfuls of beet pulp - a "sweet treat" for goats. (It smells like molasses.)

Amena was again, the tyrant who was NOT going to be milked. She kicked my arm away and laid down on the stand. I don't know what to do about her laying down. I can't really milk her when she is laying down. Does anyone have any ideas about that? Have that happen to your does?

Keci, because she is still nursing the lame kid, I'm not milking. But she does get fed on the stand every time. I have been touching her udder every time she gets on there so she is used to that. She doesn't kick me, and I even squeezed her nipple to see if she would kick, but she didn't. I think she will be fine when I start milking her. She got some beet pulp too. (I did give Amena some, but not a lot. Only when she stood still when I touched her udder.)

I am going to try to get a couple of photos of the does I'm milking tomorrow. Maybe on the stand in the morning. I'll have to see what I can do! If you have made anything or have any goat milk soap recipes, I would love them. I will be trying to make some soap, but first I have to know what I need for it! Here is one of the recipes I will be using. Jocelyn made this once, but because of the heat, it came out very thin.

Orange-Cocoa Goat Milk Soap
16 oz (1 1/2 bars) Grated Pure Olive oil Soap Bar
14 oz Fresh Goat Milk
1 oz Cocoabutter
3Tablespoons Orange Scented Oil

Directions:
First I grated the POO bars into a bowl; then I grated the peels off the lemon and tangerine, and squeezed the juice from both into peels. Afterwards, I mixed cocoabutter in with the milk and added the rest of the ingredients. I heated up the pan, and melted the mix for about 30minutes and then poured it all into a pan, lined with freezer paper. I will let this sit for four weeks until firm and ready to cut into bars.

Let's just hope my soap turns out ok. :) Well, you're welcome to comment and tell me about your milking experiences! I'd love to hear some tips of yours about milking.

Love,
  Rachel
