Hello there! Thanks for stopping by. I am pleased to have you here at Rachel's Reasoning. This is a place where I post my homesteading adventures in our family of 10. We garden, raise goats, chickens and dogs. I am hoping for some ducks and turkeys in the spring, but not sure if I am going to get them. Check my other sidebar for a list of our homestead animals.

Got Any Eggnog Recipes For Me?

Posted in Growing In Grace Magazine

I am in need of some help here. I am writing an article about Eggnog Day in December and I was wondering if any of you had any favourite eggnog recipes you wouldn't mind sharing? We are publishing our December isue of Growing In Grace Magazine, and this article will go into it.

So, if you have any, please share! I'll take nice ones, weird ones, old ones, or just the ones you like! If you have the recipe posted on your blog, you can just comment and give me the link. But if you would just like to leave the recipe in a comment, that would work too!

Thank you all!

Gotta A Reason?

Blessings Miss Rachel!
I wanted to thank you for your comment on my blog and to let you know that whatever you need or want to know on the ducks, just ask:)
We raise both Muskovey ducks and Khaki Campbells. The Muskovey are only for meat and breeding so we can make more meat ducks:) The Campbells are for eggs and meat. They were originally developed by a woman in England by the name of Adele Campbell (ergo the name) of Glouchestershire, England in the late 1800s. She needed a duck that could be raised for both meat and egg production. They lay an average of 300 eggs per year and reach a good butchering weight at around 7 to 8 months of 3-5 lbs.
A word of warning...ducks tend to be smellier and more messy than chickens. The eggs are wonderful but they have a habit of laying them in mud and burying them:P Silly things! Often we would have to "dig up" the eggs.
If butchered young enough the meat is tender and easy to cook/roast. Prepared properly a duck won't have that greasiness to it. Although the greasiness also has it's part in the flavor of the duck depending on the taste you want.
Turkeys can be raised pretty much like the chickens although they don't roost. They DO, however FLY! Soooo, if you aren't careful they will fly up and nest in your trees. Clip their wings very well so that you won't have to repeat it before they are of butchering age (around 8 months-10 months old). They like a low shelter with lots of bedding especially when the weather gets cold or extremely hot.
I hope this helps.
God be with thee!
Sister Lori
