Plain Catholic in the Mountains

Ashes and Dirt

Ash Wednesday saw many of us walking about with black smudges on our foreheads. One old gentleman at the gas station told me I had "missed a spot" and he grinned, teasing in that friendly way that folks do around here. He knew, even though he wasn't Catholic, just a country Baptist.

Tis a glorious week of weather, just the right cool temperature for the gardening. In the front of the house three rose bushes made it into the ground today.  Myself made sure to deeply manure and mound them. They will be lovely warm colors of reds, golds, and deep oranges. Happy colors. Welcoming colors.

Himself is tilling the lower garden again to work in the new load of horse manure we received. That's us this week; dirty with ashes and garden dirt. Tis a happy kind of dirty though. The kind where the muscles ache after a productive day of homesteading.

That's me away, then.
