"President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act in 1862. Under it, any adult citizen or intended citizen, male or female, could "take up" a quarter-section {160 acres} or an eighth-section {80 acres}, depending on the quality and location of the land, by paying a ten-dollar recording fee. The homesteader had to live on his land, cultivate it, and make certain minimum improvements; at the end of five years the place was his, free."

That would be lovely wouldn't it. I'd be happy with 5 acres - truth be told, lol. I love the new banner and the new look you've got on your blog. It's beautiful!
