Winter's back. And with a vengeance, I might add.
We've got freezing rain and sleet and snow all coming down at once right now. The HIGH today in my part of Arkansas 28 degrees - the low tonight is supposed to be 14. Brr. For reference, the normal high this time of year is in the mid 50's. This is just some wierd weather we're having. The day before the cold arrived, it was in the mid 70's here. Go figure.
The day before it all hit, though, we did manage to get both garden plots turned over. Carlin borrowed a friends tractor tiller (it runs off the PTO and pulls behind a tractor.) With that tiller, we managed to get about a quarter acre turned over in about 30 minutes. Of course Carlin wants one now
. But since they're about $1500, he probably will have to wait a while. Thank heavens for good neighbors, though.
I was really hoping we could get it all turned under, though, and I'm glad it got done before the freezing weather. I'm hoping the freeze will kill out some of the weeds and seeds that would otherwise be waiting to spring to life come warm weather.
My potatoes, however, will not get in the ground by president's day this year. I'm a dedicated gardener, but I won't be chipping away ice to put them in the ground lol. Hopefully this is the last good freeze we'll have. I hope I hope.
My poor critters are frozen. Everyone but the ducks and bunnies are staying inside. The ducks, I guess, don't have any more sense
and the rabbits have a nice fur coat, but the chickens and goats are having none of it. In fact, I haven't even opened the barn door in two days. The goats wouldn't go out anyway, and I'm trying to keep it as warm as possible in there. Just blocking the wind makes the critters a lot warmer, so hopefully everyone will be okay. I am a bit worried about tonight, though - 14 degrees is nothing to play with. Especially for my sun-loving south-dwelling critters.
Well, I have nothing else to add right now except that my toes are frozen
, so I'll close this entry right now. I need to put another log on the fire anyway... hope you are all warm and comfy today where you are.
Kathy
