Raspberry, Rose & Honeysuckle

Posted on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 12:18 in Gardening

My son wanted to plant something in a half whiskey barrel that we had, so he decided on a Raspberry plant.  We got one that was a year of so old from the plant store in town.  It already had blossoms all over it and it has little green berries all over it now.

I went to a garage sale last weekend, and the homeowner had honeysuckle next to the garage.  I told her how nice it smelled and that I want to plant it along my fenceline, so she pulled several growths up and gave them to me.  I planted one at each fencepost.

This is my Blaze Climbing Rose that I planted on the same fenceline last summer:

Here is the fenceline.  I'll post a picture of it one of these years when it's covered in roses and honeysuckle:

Progress of my Trees

We planted a few Hybrid Poplars last year, 1 Mimosa Tree, 1 Redbud, 1 Maple Tree and 2 Elm Trees.  The Poplars are nice looking, one got ran over with a 4 wheeler, but is still hanging on.  One Elm Tree didn't make it.  The Redbud, Maple and Mimosa are looking nice.

Here is a picture of my flower bed that I planted a couple weeks ago

The lavender in the middle is starting to bloom, and the daisies should bloom in a day or two.  The climbing rose bushes are looking nice too, but no blooms yet.

Is this Poison Ivy?

Does this look like Poison Ivy?

Fertilizer Info

Hmmmm, the fertilizer may be 10-10-10, or 10-20-5, etc.  But, what does that mean?

Think of it this way: Up - Down - All Around
The first number is the 'Up' number, this number will provide nutrients to the upper part of the plant, the foliage.  The second number is the 'Down' number, the number will provide nutrients for the root portion of the plant.  The third number is the 'All Around' number.

If you're fertilizing onions, or other root crops, you wouldn't want a 15-0-0, because the onion would have lovely green foliage at the expense of the root.  You'd want the middle (down) number to be the highest for root crops.

Country Blessings,
Jamie
