Purple Martins question
We had a couple purple martins flying in and out of my husbands barn that he is building. He put the door on it this last weekend, and today, I found both martins dead on the ground. Will it cause them to die if there home is taken? I thought that they would find another home?

I don't think that would cause them to die unless they could not get out. We do not have very many martins this year, but I think it has to do with the wild weather we have had in Missouri. Your local extension office or conervation dept. should have info on martins. If they arrive too early and there are not enough bugs they will die from starvation. I hope this helps.

I called the extension office, they said that closing the barn off and the birds losing their home wouldn't have killed them. They said it was probably a predator. We got to thinking though, the same day we closed the barn up, we also moved an old broke down jeep, which we had been seeing martins flying in and out from under. We think they may have been in the u joint or something. One was dead where the jeep had been, and the other was dead by where the jeep is set now.

I am glad the extension office helped you. I work for them here in Missouri, but in Nutrition so I wasn't sure how to answer your question.
