Do you have Satellite Internet? Please read

Posted on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 12:10 in Around the House
I have dial up and can't get DSL here where I'm located. I am trying to choose between 2 Satellite Internet companies and want to get some reports from those of you who use either of these companies. I've had DSL where I used to live and it was so nice. I've taken my laptop to the local wifi spot in town and it's wonderful. The two companies I'm looking into are:

Hughes Net
Wild Blue

If any of you use either of these, or have used them before, would you pretty please give me your thoughts on how good (or bad) the service was/is?

Thank you so much!
Jamie

We are EXTREME internet users so I get pretty frustrated with satellite, but I don't think that any one company would be particularly better than the other. As far as we can tell, their prices and service are comparable, but it's nowhere near as fast as DSL. Plus you have to watch your bandwidth. If you exceed your amount, then they cut you back to dial up speed for a couple of days. Blech.

I'd give them a C. It's much better than dial up, but expensive and frustrating compared to DSL.

It's true... we had Hughes (they bought out DirecTV) and promised on their commercials, "up to 1 MG downloads". Yeah, for about 1 minute...even when we went to the higher priced package-- then you have to deal with speed as slow as dialup for 48 hours. The FCC can't regulate them, you're at their mercy (via India support), and their equipment is all used (good luck getting good equipment). If it snows or ices up the dish, you won't get signal either. Hundreds of $'s and a lot of frustration is what satellite offers... but if you don't download any video-feeds or try to watch anything animated, (forget online movies or anything) then you'll probably be OK.
Check to see if you can get wireless microwave internet in your area instead. It's probably cheaper to install and monthly as well, and you'll get about 3X the speed of satellite, plus it doesn't react to weather! If not, I say choose Wild Blue--- only because they probably have US support (believe me, spending 4 hours trying to understand Indian and having to then call them back to re-establish your email protocols that the 1st guy messed up trying to diagnose your internet speed issue (they don't TELL you upfront that you'll have low speeds -and as you're on the phone with them magically your speed will increase! ). Anyway, call and ask about support!
Good luck!
