Raised Bed Gardening

Posted on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at 03:12 in Gardening

The seed catalogs are arriving almost daily!  I'm anxious for spring to arrive so I can get a garden in.

Have you ever watched Paul James - Gardening by the Yard?  Paul says that the surest way to successful gardening is to grow things in raised beds.  So, I've decided to build some raised beds this year.  Last year, I had a very large garden.  I took such good care of it, then the rains hit.  The only thing that didn't drown was the okra!  It was so dissappointing.  My garden will not be as large this year.  I will just plant my absolute favorites.  I'll plant enough veggies for fresh eating, and enough to can a little.

Building a Raised Bed:
First, you need to purchase some rot resistant wood such as cedar or redwood.  Unless I can find enough wood around here, I plan to purchase 3 eight foot lengths of wood.  I'll cut one in half, this will make each raised bed 4' wide and 8' long.  I will nail the ends together.

Before building a raised bed, the ground needs to be prepared.  The site needs to be leveled, landscape fabric needs to be laid over the area, or you can cover it with at least 5 layers of newspapers.  This will help prevent grass and weeds from growing up into the bed.

Add some soil and plant away!

I made my raised beds for free - I went to a fencing company. the big pallets of vinyl fencing come wrapped by 4' square raw 2x4's! and the fence people throw it away - not recycle, not use - trash! so I asked it I could have them. the owner said sure, and I now have 5 4'x4' raised beds and 5 2'x4' beds (for some reason they had some in this size) in which I have planted my berries. and I think some of my tomatoes will also go in there.

I forgot to mention that they are pine and probably not going to last very long, but they were free.... and untreated with anything, so that is a big bonus in my gardening book!

I do not have pictures of them. that would require figuring out how to transfer pictures from my camera to my computer without the connecting cable (it is lost somewhere)

My brother does this every year. He lives in a development and he can very strategically plant an amazing garden! He uses the method you talked about,

We use cynderblocks - they were free and we had a pile in our yard from previous owner. I think there is a book on doing them also. plant garlic and flowers in the outter holes to keep pests away!

I am desperate for spring also. Where are you getting seed catalogs from - I would like organic if I can find them.
