Gluten questions / Psoriasis

Posted on Friday, January 18, 2008 at 09:17 in Health and Fitness

I have psoriasis so bad on my arms, hands, shoulders, back, ankles, etc.  I'm using a .1% steroid cream, which seemed to help a little at first, but it seems to flare up some days, and it never has cleared up in any spot.

I notice that some days I flare up worse, and itch worse than others.  I'm trying to watch what I eat to determine if maybe a certain food is triggering it.  I know that about 1 in 4 women have a gluten sensitivity (according to Oprah's gynecologist yesterday on Oprah).  I have no idea what all foods have gluten in them...  does Oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, Cheerios, etc?  That's all I eat for breakfast.

I'd sure appreciate some comments here letting me know what foods have gluten in them, and what foods are OK to eat so I can try this out and see if it helps my skin a little.

Thanks!
Country Blessings,
Jamie

I don't know a lot about it - but yes, they do - you have to look closely at the ingredients - I believe Oatmeal does contain gluten. And things like cereals often add wheat starch. I think with gluten for flour/grains - you are limited to rice (does come in flour & Potato flour) and corn, possibly, and quinoa. Check out celiac.com for more info on avoiding gluten. Dairy is also the number 1 allergen & soy is also a big one - I would encourage you to set aside possibly a month where you cut those out of your diet and see if it helps. Look at it as only a month to begin & see what goes - also avoid high processed foods & white sugars - try to eat more natural/veggies, etc. I personally live much on rice and beans :0) You can do nuts and seeds for protein to fill your tummy. :0)

The previous commentor is correct. I actually think that my dyshidrotic eczema is affected by what I eat and I do think that I possibly have a gluten intolerance even if my Dr. says I don't because I ate 2 sandwich rolls yesterday and the itchiness is back in my hands again today!

I need to try to do those food challenges that Wendy mentioned. Man, I can't imagine going a month without dairy products!
